serious but yet still a fun place to work

typical day started out with staff meeting in the morning you find out what's going on with the patients, staff, the building, what to do, not to do, and extra things that could get done if you had free time I learned to manage my time efficiently threw out the workplace the best time I would have at work would be when I was all done all my duties and I would help out the recreation staff and just have some fun with the patients. Some people think that whatever its just a job you do what you got to do and get out but I never thought its just a job you sometimes really connect with the patients, cleaning staff, care aid or whatever kind of staff you are it happens and the hardest part about working in this kind of area is when you lose a patient. To come into work and hear this person passed away, definitely put a damper on the day and was definitely the HARDEST part about the job.

Points positifs

connecting with the people

Points négatifs

some of the messes i had to clean

Very supportive, welcoming work environment

As a new grad, I was very scared of how inexperienced and green I was. My position at Extendicare is very supportive of my learning and growth. I love working with the people I do. A typical shift is fairly routine, however there are always moments of unexpected change. I quickly learned to think on my feet as Charge Nurse while managing health changes with my own patients. Management is incredibly supportive and involved in care for the resident's so they remain up to date on the preferences and health status of the residents. The workplace culture we encompass is always supportive, empathetic, and collaborative. The hardest part of the job is watching a previously cognitively intact, stable resident decline due to a change in health status. The best part of the job is the relational opportunities I get with caring for the same residents every day.

Wonderful caring company!

I loved working in the Extendicare facility in Viking Alberta; they really care about the residents and their health is paramount to the Extendicare employees. Working there, I have learned how to task my days and to develop my empathy skills and to practice patience and understanding. I wish an Extendicare facility was closer to my home town, for I would love to work for them again.

If you want an ulcer, work here.

There is no consistency to anything in this facility. Some staff are worked to death while others have the ear of the administration and get away with no showing and time off for every paper cut with no consequences. Decent staff leave regularly because of daily state of emergency, lack of communication from the top and no consequences to deplorable work habits. Turn a blind eye is the motto here. "Leadership team" is only there to get in lieu time off, do personal business ie: make husbands Birthday invitations. Talk about weekends and drink at each other's houses. When residents weren't getting break fast until late morning, leadership team would walk through the dining room to staff room to get their coffees while residents had none. And refused to help feed residents as they had more important things to do.

Points positifs

Best pay in town

Points négatifs

Every hour of the day

My favorite place of employment

Absolutely loved working with the residents. Everyday was always new and different, despite being in the same building with the same staff. I would really enjoy being able to stay in Health Services, I take a lot of pride in helping people that are in need. Just to sit with a resident and have a cup of tea to make thier whole day. I still casually pick up shifts here.
