Great pay, horrible management
Operator (Ancien employé) –  Tumbler Ridge, BC29 octobre 2019
Pros:
- Excellent pay.
- Friendly co-workers.
- 12 hours a day.
- 1 week on, 1 week off.
- Wonderful owner (CEO), great guy!

Cons:
- Management was passive aggressive, rude, disrespectful, micro-managed, and set me up for failure by giving falsely granted poor grades as an excuse for dismissal.
- Management took requests from those that wished to try new things. They then set people up on machines they don't want to do out of spite and pettiness so they can laugh about it privately.
- Management never presented opportunity to various workers to prove their worth, knowledge and dedicated. Judgment was often based on favouritism, seniority and job status. If you were a regular worker, you will be treated poorly, yelled at, and belittled in front of co-workers. If you're a mechanic or someone else of importance, you'll be treated with respect and dignity.

Other thoughts:
- I really wish I could award 2 or even 3 stars overall. But due to how I was treated, regardless how amazing the owner is, I can't spare it or recommend working there to anyone wishing for some stability or job security. People work there mainly for the money because there is very little incentive to stick around for anything else.

A Great Company to Work For
Employee (Employé actuel) –  Tumbler Ridge, BC1 octobre 2019
Conuma is a very enjoyable company to work for. They offer an excellent compensation package, and it is a great work atmosphere.

Lots of opportunity for learning and growth if you are willing to put the work in... Hard work and dedication are recognized, and rewarded.

Poor Management/ HR Willow Useless
Haul Truck Operator (Ancien employé) –  Chetwynd, BC8 septembre 2019

Just don’t do it.
Rock Truck Driver (Ancien employé) –  Brule mine4 septembre 2019
It’s a lousy job and they abuse their authority since they know there is nothing else in the area. Be prepared to suck up a lot to management. The rock trucks are old and I often was told to operate trucks with broken safety equipment. Safety is in most companies vocab, these guys preach safety but often times will ignore it based on convenience.
Points positifs
Decent pay
Points négatifs
Management, forced daily prayer sessions.

Great place to Work, Learn and Grow professionally
Maintenance Administrator (Employé actuel) –  Willow Creek Mine, BC23 juillet 2019
A typical workday for an admin staff such as myself starts at 7 am and ends at 4 pm Monday to Friday, giving you the evenings and weekends to relax and unwind. There are lots of new things to learn every day.

The multi-culture environment makes the workplace even more interesting. You would be surprised (in a good way) as to what you can learn from different cultures. Everyone here are very friendly and supportive giving you a reason and a chance to be a better person than you were the previous day.

The only disadvantage is the location of the Willow Mine. It is situated 30 minutes from Chetwynd towards Mackenzie and for those living outside of Chetwynd it may be a hassle to travel for work.

But hey, remember all good things come at a cost. In this scenario it is Travel.
If you are willing to travel for 30 min to 1 hour for work then rest assured you will be happy with the work environment, pay, etc.

It is an extreme pleasure working here; especially when you have so much room from growth and the pay is good as well.

it is for sure a great place to Work, Learn and Grow professionally.

Do not come and work for this company
IT specialist (Ancien employé) –  Tumbler Ridge, BC21 juin 2019
They have many unqualified management people doing it wrong with no education at all. NO background checks, this is only a place for people with no manners and there is a huge politics, plus the town has nothing to offer. This company doesn't have IT best practices and a ransomware may happen anytime no every projects is delayed for no reason, the CFO is relying in the IT manager which is a huge risk due that there is nothing competitive here.

Worst mining operation I’ve ever seen!
Equipment Operator (Ancien employé) –  Tumbler Ridge, BC6 juin 2019
All equipment is neglected most beyond the point of repair but they still run it (supervisor motto if you don’t run it someone else will )
More communication through texting and messenger than on the radio supervisors included!!
Operators bust there a** in equipment that should be in a scrap yard while management sits back and complains about not meeting targets.
The level of education and experience in middle management is non existent. Mine managers hiding in the corner until something goes wrong.Safety is non existent as well .. near misses and incidents get swept under the rug thinking it will go away. I’m sure if the ministry of mines knew half of what is going on there the gates would be closed .. if there was a complete middle management change from supervisor to mine management hr included it could be a good place to be until that happens I would not suggest working here at all ..

Dozer Operator Willow Creek
Dozer Operator (Employé actuel) –  Chetwynd, BC5 juin 2019
I find Conuma to be a good company to work for. It is restarting these mines so everything is getting going so don’t expect it to work perfect but is getting better. The equipment is older but maintenance is done regularly. I find the other employees good to work with and are supportive.
As far as pay it is ok not top rate but reasonable $38.17 for dozer and full benefits start on first day.
Bonuses are paid monthly and can vary a lot from what seen. 1000- 400 gross. It’s a bonus nonetheless.
They bus you from town about 45 min which is not paid.
Finding accommodation in Chetwynd can be tough but not impossible. There is talk of adding bussing from Dawson Creek which would help.
In a tough economy it’s a good full time job and I don’t understand why the tough time finding employees.
Points positifs
Full time with benefits

Don’t be fooled
Heavy Equipment Operator (Ancien employé) –  Willow Creek3 mai 2019
Don’t be fooled. The bonuses are garbage. You’ll get between 300-600 take home. Meanwhile rent in Chetwynd for a bachelor suite is $1200/mth. The buses are freezing in the winter. So much so they have wool blankets for you. The equipment is run down and always DOWN. Management is more inexperienced than anything I’ve ever seen. People are promoted based on who they’re friends with, not experience. Did I mention the “bonuses are garbage!” Don’t believe what the recruiters tell you!

much potential, but not a reliable company
MTC Foreman (Ancien employé) –  Chetwynd, BC17 avril 2019
Really wanted this position to work out.

Some good things: comp package is excellent, no complaints.
Company hires to promote a respectful culture.

But:expectations are unrealistic given the resources provided.
The least skilled workforce I've seen.
Ancient equipment with limited budget to improve.
Zero understanding or commitment to improve reliability.

People in leadership positions that are woefully unqualified.
CYA culture is deeply embedded - the worst I've seen anywhere.
Very minor problems are immediately elevated to Dept. Managers.
This is typical with the wrong people in leadership positions.

Safety was my biggest concern. They do not walk the talk.
I resigned before I had to deal with a fatality under my Supervision.

With some time to reflect, it is clear the Co is short term.
All mining is, but this is different.
Most mining Co's have a vision a few years out.
Conuma operates on a week to week basis.
There is zero long term planning of anything.
Met coal prices are on the decline.
I'd expect lights out pretty soon.

Expect I'm not alone in this conclusion.
And this is part of the reason they cannot recruit qualified local talent.
Points positifs
ability to negotiate a good package
Points négatifs
lack of commitment to, or no knowledge of, industry best practices

Employees were made to feel like family members
HR Coordinator (Employé actuel) –  Tumbler Ridge, BC24 mars 2019
Although the community was remote the people of Tumbler Ridge always made me feel welcome and one of them.

The culture of the company was very good and treated employees like family.

I enjoy working for the company but in my new role I am uncertain how long the position will exist.
Points positifs
The way they treat their employees as part of the family and a part of their success.
Points négatifs
The lack of training to do your job well and properly

Boom to Bust.
Operations (Employé actuel) –  Tumbler Ridge, BC22 mars 2019
Unfortunately not very Safety focused, which is never a desired company to work for. They need more experienced, safety focused individuals in their higher positions. They have somewhat of the proper procedures in place, unfortunately no one believes them that "enforces them".

Confidentiality is extremely poor. This again comes from the lack of experience and lack of diverse management. Also an issue in a small town which is expected. Need people that have not grown up in Tumbler running the show.

Tumbler is a great town to live in, I have been living here for 5 years and the people are fantastic outside of work.

Extremely negative place to work, just brings everyones morals down. Once again this comes to mid level management.

Expect your shifter to yell at you on the radio and put you down when you ask questions, especially involving safety. Some shifters on the other hand are fantastic.

I would never recommend this company unless your options were extremely limited and had no other choice.

A place to work as much as you can, turn a blind eye, and get a decent cheque for a short time.

Advice: Offer a little more money to middle level management, attract some qualified employees and almost all of these issues disappear.
Points positifs
Decent Salary + Benefits, good town.
Points négatifs
Poor management, poor employee relations

A young company who needs a professional HR consultant team to get them back on track
HR Professional, BC (Ancien employé) –  BC21 mars 2019
This company has potential. From reading the reviews, it is clear the company needs to conduct a site-wide needs assessment to determine the gaps in their procedures, performance, employee morale and many other aspects and measure the results against their desired outcomes for employee engagement, performance, and bottom-line. In my opinion, leaders need to hire a team of HR consultants to overhaul all policies and procedures with the goal of having a highly-engaged workforce! They need a Total Rewards System in place, and It can be done, but will cost a significant amount of time and money.

Great People. Management Walks the Talk. Beautiful town.
Employee (Ancien employé) –  Tumbler Ridge19 février 2019
Worked there for a year and a half and saw a lot of good hard working folks getting a lot of good stuff done. Nothing's perfect but these people took 3 mines out of "moth balls" and made something out of them. Met only a few bad apples, but every workplace has them. The scenery is beautiful and the town is full of really good hearted folks. Hard to beat the salary to cost of living ratio in Tumbler Ridge.

Not worth it
Labourer (Ancien employé) –  Chetwynd, BC6 février 2019
Terrible Plant management. Most of them are sour and disrespectful. I wouldn't recommend working there to anyone. The money is okay but its not worth the trouble. Management is clearly not happy with what they're doing. From what I can tell the only reason why anyone would willingly stay in such a toxic work environment is because they don't have the skills, education, or attitude to find a better job. Which gives you an idea of the the type of people they attract.
