At CIBC, I got the opportunity to see how the business world works and learn a lot about daily business transactions. I was treated well by coworkers and taught the responsibilities sufficiently. I was able to satisfy clients with excellent client service, which felt amazing.

Most people in retail banking want to get out. It's stressful and you receive mixed messaging from management. You are treated as a client in opposed to a worker. They work hard to sell their staff on the benefits of their products while never talking about what is competitive advantages.

No balance between family and work

I was responsible for reception duties; merchandising product information; filing mail; deposits; supporting the adviser assistants with some of their client requests, such as international transfer of funds, buying and selling of mutual funds, and making contributions to registered products; printing cheques for clients; ordering office supplies; etc.
I learned just how multi-faceted the investement business is, as well as how much is required in administrative and assistant roles. The management in this office was very personable, never requiring more than was humanly possible, allowing necessary time to complete given tasks. My co-workers likewise were supportive and very appreciative of my assistance with their tasks.
Even with all of the understanding and support, the sheer number of daily duties sometimes felt overwhelming, especially around tax time, when most clients needed to get their contributions in at the last minute and we were all on a time crunch to get the tasks done by the deadline. That being said though, the efforts did not go unnoticed and I loved knowing that the job I was doing was of great assistance to everyone in the office and that everyone's job was a little easier because of the role that I played. It was very fulfilling in that sense.

CIBC and CIBC Woodgundy is a fast paced, sometimes stressful financial institution in which customer satisfaction and financial growth are always top priority, both for clients and for the business.
Daily transactions are made in accounts, whether it be personal transfers, withdrawals/deposits, international transfers, bill payments, or stock and mutual fund sales/purchases.
Welcoming the client into the branch and helping them to feel valued and respected is of utmost importance, as it builds a high degree of trust and satisfaction for the client.
The management in both the retail branch and the investment branch is very friendly, personable, and approachable, producing a comfortable work environment. Likewise, my co-workers were very friendly, happy to assist each other with any work challenges or concerns, lending to a successful team environment.
The most challenging part of the job is helping allay client stress or concerns when they do not see the desirable financial growth, especially in the stock market. But that aside, it is very fulfilling to know that you have contributed to a positive experience for the client, whether it be in the atmosphere at the branch or assisting the client to meet any known or newly discovered financial needs.
