Every day I see clients that are so grateful for the help they receive here. The staff are so empathetic and truly understand the needs of the populations they serve. The leadership of this place are a different story altogether. Those same clients who appreciate the work of staff also express their discontent with the structures, processes, and environment of Carea that betrays to them and the community a micromanaging and incompetent leadership that hinders healthcare rather than promotes it.

Apart from the satisfaction I derive from helping the clients in the community, I hate working here – everyday is the same horror show when it comes to ‘enjoying’ the awful working conditions. Since it’s so bad, what would really solve the problem if is the unqualified and inept leaders would pack up their personal effects and be escorted out of here. The good employees have been sacrificed at the altar of ‘leadership’ incompetence: If Carea no longer wants martyrs, they should stop the crucifixions.


It would also help if the HR Keyboard Warrior would stop pretending to be a cheery employee that doesn’t exist. That’s what you might call false advertising. More than one new employee has been duped by false images of what Carea is like, only to leave soon after being hired. Let’s stop the martyrdoms.


The frontline workers who do great work are not the problem - the buck stops with those who lead (that's "Leadership 101"). It takes maturity and insight to realize that basic and fundamental fact, which true leaders have no problem grasping. Not so with Carea leaders – remember,

The staff at Carea do amazing work in our community. Everyday I see clients that are so grateful for the help they receive here. The staff are so empathetic and truly understand the needs of the populations they serve. We are fortunate to work in a place that gives us so much autonomy. We can develop programs that are specific to community needs and our managers are always encouraging us to submit different ideas. We are all encourage to sit on external committees to help develop new collaborations. I love working here - everyday is different and I always feel like we are making a difference in the lives of our clients.

While it may make the leadership feel better to mischaracterize and downplay the complaints of employees as a “smear campaign,” by so doing they are simply (and ironically) validating the consensus of complaints by their stubborn refusal to listen, misdirection of anger, and minimizing of employees’ valid concerns. HR should know better, but they don’t – which is part and parcel of why we are here in the first place. Leadership has caused our problems and they are angry at us for having problems – make sense to you? Of course not. But it helps them soothe their guilty consciences so they can sleep better at night. “Deny it’s us and say it’s them” – a classic yet immature strategy. Definitely not a winning strategy!

HR can attempt to assure all they want that management and leadership are listening and that things as so wonderful at Carea. Those with an ounce of sense can see through the pathetic act.


If I were you, I would take my resume elsewhere!

I keep hearing about the terrible working conditions at Carea. If people think it's that bad, you know what would really solve the problem for you? If people that were negative left. If every single negative employee were to leave Carea, the toxicity would be lower and the rest of us would still be here, and the negative people would no longer be wreaking havoc on the place and leaving communities to suffer in its wake. This is why negative people have got to go.

The people who work at Carea are here for the people of the community, working hard to make Carea a positive place to work (which is why we stay!) -- but some of the union members actively work against other union members good efforts to make things better for our colleagues and for our communities. This would make staying here more of a viable option, which is why more and more martyrs must walk out the door (I can't say I would blame them). However, I appreciate those who remain at Carea and who work hard to serve the community and contribute in a positive way. We want a positive work environment - and the 'martyrs' need to get on board with that agenda. However, they either can't or they won't. This is why the bitter martyrs have got to go; this is why the complaining martyrs need to recognize when it's time to go and make way for some great people who want to come to work at Carea.

We keep being told to LEAVE if we don't like the terrible working conditions at Carea, but that wouldn't really solve the problem, now would it? Even if every single unionized employee were to leave Carea, the problem at the top ("leadership") would still be there, wreaking havoc on the place and leaving communities to suffer in its wake. This is why the leadership has got to go.

We unionized employees are here for the people of the community, working hard to make Carea a better place (which is why we stay!) -- but the so-called leadership actively works against our good efforts to make things better for the company and for our communities. This makes staying here less and less of a viable option, which is why more and more good employees must walk out the door (I can't say I blame them). However, neither can I blame those who remain at Carea (at least for the time being) who work hard to serve the community and to make Carea a better place. We want the place to be better - much better - and the "leadership" needs to get on board with that agenda. However, they either can't or they won't. This is why the leadership has got to go; this is why the current leadership needs to be replaced.

I really like working at Carea CHC. I love coming to work every day knowing that I am having a positive impact on my community. The people I work with are collaborative, creative, resilient and passionate about the work we are doing. I appreciate this so much. I work alongside some great people. We make a great team.

I have great benefits, sick & vacation days and a pension!!! There aren't a lot of workplaces anymore that offer this kind of package. I also have a generous professional development package.


Carea has gone through a lot of changes in the last couple of years and I won't say that there isn't room for improvement. These changes are a part of why I love working here; I am part of an era of reinvention with a great agency that I wanted to work at for years as I admired the work they did as someone who worked in the community.


The majority of the people in charge listen and I believe they care and realize that there is room to make things better. Unfortunately things can take time. I am willing to stay the course as I believe in the work I do and the mission and vision of Carea. We have great managers that are super supportive & responsive, a director who makes sure she comes in the front door every day to say hi and ask how I am doing (and actually waits for an answer) and a new human resources person that I feel comfortable with and trust.

A lot of great work is done by the staff at Carea. They are empathetic, loyal, collaborative and truly care about the clients they serve. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the leadership.

For my part, I have never expected those in charge to be ‘mind readers.’ However, I had (naively) thought and hoped that they might listen to my legitimate concerns. I tried hard, time and again, to voice my concerns. However, they have shown that they are either unable or unwilling to address the issues that are brought forward. Their ears are firmly shut to any voice but their own. Are they incapable or unwilling to listen? I don’t really know, all I know is that no matter how many times we tell them what's going on, things never change. In fact, things only seem to get worse. Working in an environment with arrogant leadership that can never do any wrong is hardly an environment that inspires productivity and growth, let alone basic contentment (let’s not even talk about happiness). That’s why leadership has got to go. Quite frankly, the present conditions at Carea are disrespectful to us employees and is not good for our mental health. You might even say it’s a toxic environment, as others have said. This present leadership needs to be led out the door so that we can benefit from leadership that actually leads – and cares.

Working at North Carea has been challenging, to say the least. My colleagues are great - it’s the so-called ‘leadership’ that sucks. There is no growth and no opportunity here. My manager works hard to do her job and to be there for her staff, but even she can’t do her job properly because of the leadership’s micromanaging incompetence (that’s a bad combination). If you are looking for a place to grow – nearly anywhere else will do! This place is a cesspool of stagnation.

Working at Carea has been challenging, busy and rewarding. The staff are great, there is new management and we are entering a new phase of growth and opportunity. The new clinical manager is amazing; she is always available, has an open door policy for everyone, is very inclusive and listens to her staff when Change is required. She uses staff feedback when planning for programs and offer everyone a chance to speak up and provide ideas. If you are looking for a place to grow- this is the place!

I have been employed at Carea for 5 years and I have wound up in a job in which I am unsupported by my Managers and my Director. It’s very discouraging. As a health promoter, I find my work very unrewarding when it should be the opposite experience. I am given few opportunities for professional development. They say I have the ability to design the programs that I want to create based on client feedback and my own interests, but then they squash those program ideas before they have a chance to even get out the door. I am always being micromanaged and I really feel that my Manager and Director don’t trust and believe in me. Team meetings are a waste of time and our opinions don’t really matter.

This department is not a good place to be despite the good people I work with. Notwithstanding that I get to see my clients develop new skills or improve upon existing ones, that unfortunately can’t make up for the lack of supports and toxic environment that characterize Carea.


I would NOT recommend working here.

Happiness is not merely an internal job (it doesn’t simply come from within). Environmental factors play a significant role in people’s lives - we are supposed to know this in the kind of work we do and in the people we serve. We don’t tell clients that happiness comes from within when their social and external circumstances are unjust and inhumane. That would be downright cruel. Clearly, Carea is out-of-touch with the community and the people we are meant to serve.

I hate working at Carea. The culture, the leadership and the job are degrading and demoralizing. I wake up every morning dreading to come to work. Everybody is entitled to their opinions, but some opinions are clearly better informed and more honestly presented than others. You can’t just “make” your work circumstances better - suggesting otherwise is tone-deaf, insulting and disrespectful. Carea has depleted from me the happiness and goodwill I once had when I first started working at this place. Not a great place to be.

It’s deeply saddening whenever the union is denigrated for fighting for Carea employees - it’s another sign of callous indifference to the plight of Carea employees and it betrays ignorance of the trauma they suffer. Many of us had not had a raise in years. This agency kept telling us there was “no money.” The union worked tirelessly to negotiate an increase in our wage grid during bargaining, but their efforts were thwarted by the bargaining committee that represented the agency. Because of the efforts of the union we all got small increases that we would not have gotten without them. It’s not enough, but something is better than nothing. Only the ignorant would be angry at the wounded, blaming the victims for not fighting harder to fend off their attackers. Traumatized employees at Carea have experienced ‘shell-shock’ and must resort to a ‘freezing’ response in order to attempt to survive in the face of unrelenting abuse. While the union fought tooth-and-nail for Carea employees, Carea employees did not dare strike for a better contractual deal for raises or many other issues: Shell-shocked, we froze. Blaming abused employees for not asking for more abuse is disgusting and shameful. Be grateful for your union, and don’t displace your anger for Carea onto friends who wish to help you.

Carea has a group of excellent and qualified front line staff who care for the clients. Many go above and beyond to fill gaps in service provision. There is however, a generalized toxicity in this workplace. As a health professional, I was often prevented from functioning within my scope of practice. Supervisors and Senior Management are under qualified for the positions they are in. Clerical staff are given power that is inappropriate and the focus is on achieving stats and data reported to the ministry of health to secure funding (many of these stats are padded and falsified) These same clerical staff are directing the care of professionals and pressuring those with a scope of practice to work outside of professional conduct to get those stats and achieve results. Morally and ethically it is a very damaging and toxic environment. I would not recommend working here. If you truly love being involved in health care and helping people you will be misled working for this type of organization. It is a shame as I have experienced other community health centres that are doing great work and are the heart of their community. Carea is NOT one of these organizations!

A leadership that masquerades as happy employees is nothing short of pathetic. These are the kinds of three-, four-, and five-star tactics employed by the dictatorship ('leadership') of Carea ('North Korea') Community Health Centre. They attempt to distract and confuse in an attempt to salvage their faltering image rather than openly and honestly address the misery, grief, and hardship of their talented employees. The employees cry out, and their pain is dismissed and negated. How hurtful.

Working here is the pits. Why apply here when you can actually be happy and productive almost anyplace else? I was glad to get out when I did! Wish I'd done it sooner.

I got infected with Careavirus. There were no screening procedures put in place to assess this toxic environment, and now I am very ill. If you don't want to get Careavirus, I suggest you don't step foot in the door of this unhealthy environment.

The most enjoyable part of my job is working with the people of the community. The worst part of my job is that I cannot serve those people as well as I could because the 'leadership' has unleashed their toxicity, making us all sick. A typical day of work involves me counting the passing seconds on the clock until I can go home and begin breathing freely again.


This toxic environment was created and is now perpetuated by those who purport to 'lead' in this pace. No one will be able to breathe freely again until they are gone.

Poor Communication. "Poor" is actually an understatement.  They keep telling us it will change, but it does not. It actually might be getting worse. And when they do communicate it does not feel supportive. Instead it feels disrespectful, and it is condescending and directive (not collaborative).

I don't have anything good to say about those who occupy positions of responsibility at this agency. Many of them are unqualified and were appointed to their positions under questionable circumstances. This has had a chilling effect on the life of the agency, and it is suffering badly.

It's a privilege serving the community. It's unfortunate the leadership of this agency doesn't appreciate this privilege.

Happiness comes from within. I love to work at Carea. The culture, the people and the job are exciting - helping the community is the most important value that Carea and I share. I wake up every morning wanting to come to work. Everybody is entitled to their opinions, however, what you make out of it is entirely up to you. I choose to be and give positive energy, and that is what I get from the members of the staff that I work with. Great place to be.

I have been employed at Carea for 5 years and I feel lucky that I have been supported and encouraged by my Managers and my Director. As a health promoter, I find my work very rewarding. I am given opportunities for professional development and am given the ability to design the programs that I want to create based on client feedback and my own interests.

This department is a great place to be because of the people I work with and because I get to see my clients develop new skills or improve upon existing ones. In this role, I am able to see supports, friendships and communities develop from all cultures and all walks of life.


The work I do here and the team I am on makes a positive impact on the community I serve. I am allowed to plan my programming without being micromanaged and I really feel like my Manager and Director trust and believe in me.


I am kept up to date on what is happening in the centre with monthly department meetings. Our team is always asked about which date and time work best and to be fair to all, the location of the meeting rotates between sites.


I would recommend working here.

Leadership needs to adjust their attitude. Yes this might not be the “worst” workplace, but it is definitely not the best (it isn’t even a good enough workplace). To be “an employer of choice” (as they claim to want to be), would you not want to strive to be the best we can be, rather than settle for being just better than the worst place to work?!
