Your experience at Canadian Tire will depend on the dealer/owner of the business. First thing i want to say is don't expect much in terms of pay, even as a manager you're sitting at the 14-17 dollor a hour rate which for a Manager is not great at all. Benefits are very basic and profit sharing is not guaranteed, everything is dependent on the location if your dealer/owner is cheap there will be no yearly raises or benefits which chances are you won't be getting them

Nobody seems happy their, even the managers. Working at Canadian Tire is very boring and tedious, as a manager you will have to work 9-11 hours shifts and during the non busy retail seasons your hour may get cut which will cancel your benefits, a fare warning there will be no training and communication is seriously lacking. Before you get hired on be sure to ask a lot of questions about your pay/benefits.

Canadian Tire is a good place to begin your career and, for some, to remain for the long haul. You have an average salary but some great benefits and bonuses if you move to a managerial position or higher. The lack of clear meritocratic culture creates a higher turnover especially with high potential candidates. There is a lot of rigidity with organizational structure that dampens the enthusiasm of those who truly want to advance rapidly. There is also a lot of compartmentalization in the firm which by definition creates confusion on mandates and redundancy of work at times.

Canadian Tire business model is unique in retail as it relies on a network of Dealers across Canada. Profit & risk sharing between the Corporate and the Dealers has been the hallmark of this Canadian stalwart for decades hence making it very risk averse to changes. This resistance to change is a common place within Canadian Tire work culture.


Yet, there is a desire of late to diversify the portfolio of the Canadian Tire Corporate (i.e. a series of acquisitions that attempts mitigate future risk). There is also a desire to make Canadian Tire more brand driven than product focus. As you would expect, these changes are slow and will take time. Most of the old guard are from the traditional merchandising-driven world making the transition even slower.

they gave me good hours but didn't compensate very well for sickness and family issues, had both my brothers working there as well and if they did something wrong they would blame and punish me.

It is what you make of it. If you can put in long hours and keep up to the fast pace then you can succeed. Customer interaction can be rewarding yet difficult.
