The managers at the company needs modern training on public relationships.
At the time of my employment my job description was not clear as to what being a diesel mechanic do at the railroad, there should be a clear instruction as to what your job description about and the job culture needs to be addressed vigorously too much discrimination goes on with out being corrected because it's the seasoned workers being discriminating .

aside from the pay and benefits, what used to be a great job is now toxic because of bad management
It was a great place to work until 2015. All the experienced people were dismissed or retired and replaced by non-railway supervisors who don't know what they are doing. The culture is toxic and the company does not care for the wellbeing of their employees. There is no work-life balance and if a supervisor does not like you, they will make your life a living heck.
Points positifs
salary and benefits
Points négatifs
incompetent junior management and dictatorial upper management

Easy job, great wage, terrible company
Working at CP is like working in a special little bubble where time theft does not exist. For each eight hour day you really only work for about five hours, maybe less if you're paired with certain people. The work is dirty sometimes but never really strenuous; cranes do the heavy lifting and locomotives are relatively easy to work on.

Aside from the relatively high pay, there are not many pros to this career as a diesel tech at CP. Apprentices rotate 3 months at a time on the various shifts, 7-3, 3-11, and 11-7. The apprenticeship is only company-wide, however. Not ITA. After 3 years (or if you qualify to skip apprenticeship) you are at the bottom of the totem pole and are placed in the fuel stand on night shift. It is a place where Diesel Service Assistants used to preside. CP nixed that contract and now they want Diesel Mechanics to go clean toilets and fuel units (at the DM rate of pay). What a bad idea. After maybe 5-10 years, you may be able to bid your way into a different shift. Good luck, many elderly men refuse to retire even though their pension is already set to go. When they do retire they'll probably only live to enjoy 4 years of pension I wager. Serious.

The afternoon shift earns a $0.75 premium, while nights only earn $0.25 on top of that. The night shift is frustratingly pointless, as maybe five or seven people are there each shift and a few, if not all of them are sent to the fuel stand. The diesel shop sits empty but they still have people working nights. Employees would be happier to not have to work nights so needlessly. How do they expect there

Was the best job I've ever had
Coming into a high paying, Unionized environment, CP was the shining star of my mechanical career. From the hiring process, training, work duties, front line supervisors... everyone I worked with was the very best. Balances, structured, orderly, understanding, and excellent employee relations from the Union and Company. Until, the new CEO took control in 2012. Since then, it's been a disaster. Employees fearful of management, the smallest infraction can result in termination, safety has crashed, and job security is a distant memory.
Diesel Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, testing, repairing and maintaining CP's fleet of locomotives. Service, mobile maintenance, and road diesel inspector are some of our qualifications. Safety is always at the front of your mind in every job. 250 tonnes of steel isn't very forgiving. Focus, awareness, and a clear understanding of our job are all key elements of this position.
Points positifs
Excellent wages, great co-workers
Points négatifs
New CEO, hostile environment, lack of security

Productive and fun to work, specially in service track operation curriculum
T he routine of our work is moving of locomotives servicing, refuelling
and repair. lots of different type co-workers some are always yelling but lazy, some are cooperative and helpful, I enjoy working with those people who had 20 to 30 years experience woking to this company, and the hardest part of my job is during winter time working outside or servicing and repair under extreme cold temperature.

Great place to work before Hunter Harris took over
Thought it would be my last job and it started off that way. Unfortunately Hunter Harris likes to run is company with an iron fist and keep all of his employees in a state of fear and uncertainty. The money was above average for mechanics in the industry, however this came at the price of working shift work and having days off during the week as opposed to weekends. My co-workers were great and most of us became friends outside of work. Management at a lower level, although good people, lacked mechanical and industry know how. As the pressure started coming down from the top, tension began forming between management and employees. Respect and dignity became a thing of the past, which is unfortunate. I became a casualty of greed and desire to get the stock price even higher. More work, more profits, however he still decided to cut 20% of us in Toronto.
Points positifs
Pay, Pension, Employee Share Purchase Plan, Co-workers
Points négatifs
work/life balance, Uncertainty, complete dis regard for collective agreement, You're just a number

productive hard worker
Drive/Move, Test and Repair Llocomotives, could be a great place to work with better management and more planing, working night shift seems to get no help with other shifts, and not enough communication within the supervisors
