It's a lifestyle aka sacrifice!
Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Toronto, ON2 juin 2019
If you can live with staying away from home for extended periods, sacrificing your social and personal life, being burnt out and working with little to no appreciation from the management and living under fear of getting fired after a mistake which inevitably will happen due to the fear culture and being overworked under stress then this is the job for you. Ps. the only silver lining would be the pay and benefits but is that worth it for the sacrifice you're gonna make for the family as you only got one life! Choose wisely!
Points positifs
Pay and benefits
Points négatifs
Bully management, toxic culture and stressful life

Abysmal Morale
Train Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Toronto, ON27 avril 2018
This Place has no vertical communication between labour and management. It is micromanaged "top-down" by individuals who are completely unplugged from the realities of the job.
Points positifs
Benefits, working outdoors, great coleagues, lots of self direction and responsibity.
Points négatifs
Abysmal morale, high animosity, mistrust between labour and management, multiple examples of petty and vindictive behavior.

No work/life balance
Train Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Toronto, ON26 février 2018
Being on the train you are always out of town, never home and unable to pre-plan anything in your life. The money is great however and you can make a very good living financially. Not very good however if you have a family for you will be unable to go to kids events and social gatherings.

rewarding fast-paced work environment
Rail Traffic Controller (Ancien employé) –  Toronto, ON29 juin 2016
It was an extremely busy work environment (24-7)365 days/yr. and there was not much time for leisurely socializing at work. We were expected to work 8 hr. shifts without a meal break and could be asked to extend to 12 hr. shift on short notice.
The hardest part of the job was when things got very busy because the incoming workpace was random and uncontrollable.
The best part of the job was getting through a very busy period having done a good job with good results.
It is hard to comment on mgmt. because it changed often.
What I learned on this job was time management and prioritization skills and how to effectively communicate succinctly with a variety of people throughout the day.
I also learned to adapt quickly to fluid unpredictable situations.
Points positifs
good pay and benefits
Points négatifs
erratic hours and forced overtime

great people to work with, horrible company to work for
Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Toronto, ON29 janvier 2016
After being rushed out the door, with or with out a plan of action, you begin to essentially move freight from point A to B all day long. You don't have a choice, you must work overtime. While there I increased my communication skills and further developed an extremely proficient work ethic. Middle mangement is average to work under and your co-workers are great to work with. Everyone that you are directly involved with, ultimately, is there to help eachother out. The hardest part of the job is to work past management's inefficienties while rembering to follow ALL of the rules, especially when management asks you to bend/ break them. The most enjoyable part of the job is going home as it affords you a pretty good life away from work.
Points positifs
reliable paycheck
Points négatifs
long hours, unpredictable schedule, no time off

Was the best job I've ever had
Diesel Mechanic (Ancien employé) –  Toronto, ON25 novembre 2015
Coming into a high paying, Unionized environment, CP was the shining star of my mechanical career. From the hiring process, training, work duties, front line supervisors... everyone I worked with was the very best. Balances, structured, orderly, understanding, and excellent employee relations from the Union and Company. Until, the new CEO took control in 2012. Since then, it's been a disaster. Employees fearful of management, the smallest infraction can result in termination, safety has crashed, and job security is a distant memory.
Diesel Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, testing, repairing and maintaining CP's fleet of locomotives. Service, mobile maintenance, and road diesel inspector are some of our qualifications. Safety is always at the front of your mind in every job. 250 tonnes of steel isn't very forgiving. Focus, awareness, and a clear understanding of our job are all key elements of this position.
Points positifs
Excellent wages, great co-workers
Points négatifs
New CEO, hostile environment, lack of security

Great place to work before Hunter Harris took over
Diesel Mechanic (Employé actuel) –  Toronto, ON2 mai 2013
Thought it would be my last job and it started off that way. Unfortunately Hunter Harris likes to run is company with an iron fist and keep all of his employees in a state of fear and uncertainty. The money was above average for mechanics in the industry, however this came at the price of working shift work and having days off during the week as opposed to weekends. My co-workers were great and most of us became friends outside of work. Management at a lower level, although good people, lacked mechanical and industry know how. As the pressure started coming down from the top, tension began forming between management and employees. Respect and dignity became a thing of the past, which is unfortunate. I became a casualty of greed and desire to get the stock price even higher. More work, more profits, however he still decided to cut 20% of us in Toronto.
Points positifs
Pay, Pension, Employee Share Purchase Plan, Co-workers
Points négatifs
work/life balance, Uncertainty, complete dis regard for collective agreement, You're just a number

Excellent people
Account Manager (Employé actuel) –  Toronto18 avril 2013
Excellent people, great opportunity if willing to relocate. I've had very positive experiences with management and co workers. Long hours and some corporate instability are the downside but if you love the job the people are enough to make it worth the while.
