Better to be unionized than in management
Assistant Track Supervisor (Ancien employé) –  Saskatchewan18 octobre 2019
Management for my department was always demanding. Workweeks were usually 6 days and 50-60 hours. This is not what people tell you when you are hired. There is a bonus, but it does not cover the overtime that was worked. In general, I liked the work but it was the worst job I ever had. I never complained about the salary, I just would have like to have had a little more of a life outside of work. When a problem arises, upper management is always looking to point a finger, there must be someone at fault. My experience was good up until senior management needed a scapegoat to protect them. I do wish I could have retired with CN.

Massive company with many options.
CN - Crew Dispatcher (Employé actuel) –  Edmonton, AB10 octobre 2019
CN is a 24/7/365 operation. Majority of jobs are Unionized, pay is admirable, and adequate for the high level of stress and pace that comes with the job.

Beyond a joke of a place
Equipment Operator (Employé actuel) –  Calgary, AB10 octobre 2019
Lazy management, condescending supervisors, uneducated staff, poor mentorship, unwillingness to embrace change, terrible safety standards (worst I have ever seen) given that I am a healthy and safety professional. The spareboard program has your entire life literally at the mercy of CN (I’m assuming that’s CN Rails objective though). No scheduled days off, just waiting on a daily text for your start time. Literally every day of your life.

Run away
Work Equipment Field Mechanic (Ancien employé) –  Edmonton, AB/ Prince George BC9 octobre 2019
They present a big shinny game, but it couldn’t be farther from the truth. They will promise you the world and when you get there it is all a lie. They will not tell you that you will have 4-7 weeks of payed schooling that if you don’t pass you don’t have a job at the end of it. Management is very poor and disrespectful towards their employees, organization skills? For a 100 year old company you would seriously think they could organize their way out of a wet paper pag.... I would not recommend working for them at all.

Everything is fine here but I do not want to review this company
Laborer, LMU (Employé actuel) –  Edmonton, AB4 octobre 2019
I do not want to review this company. I will continue to write gibberish until I have reached the minimum number of characters. There is no option to skip this but it should not be required.

Seriously, stay away
Conductor (Ancien employé) –  British Columbia1 octobre 2019
Absolutely the most toxic workplace you can work in. Constant battle of management and union employees, neither will cooperate with each other. Management is crooked, union employees are lazy and use the union to get away with being such.

Management claims they want safe employees but really all they want is a bonus. It’s a scandal all the way from low level managers to the corporate office.

Be prepared to work all day every day, don’t kid yourself, this company will promise you everything, and then fight TOOTH & NAIL to take it from you. Overall, the place is a stinking cess pool of toxic garbage. Steer clear unless you want a miserable life.

If you’re thinking about hiring on, don’t. The Railway isn’t what it’s made out to be. The pay isn’t worth the daily torment.

No no no
Railcar Mechanic (Ancien employé) –  Toronto, Macmillan yard28 septembre 2019
The job is suitable for young people who haven't finished school and want to get good money. Work is around the clock on the night shift for the next twenty years with two weekends midweek which means you can forget about normal life for thirty dollars an hour. Work is all the time outside all the time they don't care about the rain or cold you're out on point. This is not a place for anyone to survive

Loved the job hated the fact that there was no job security
Conductor/yardman (Ancien employé) –  Symington yard25 septembre 2019
Absolutely loved the job. Couldn’t stand the fact that management would call people in for discipline for bogus or reasons beyond the control of a conductor/yardmans control.

Assistant Track Supervisor (Ancien employé) –  Western Canada18 septembre 2019
extremely challenging and very demanding. No life work balance and very stressful job. A very dangerous job, and the work load is overwhelming. this job is for young single individuals who can give the company 100 % of their time and energy.

ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYST (Ancien employé) –  Montréal, QC18 septembre 2019
Hard to write a general review since most of your experience depends on your direct supervisors.

If you don’t want a work life balance. This is the place. Terrible management. The person in charge of scheduling has no idea what she is doing and is very rude and bitter.

Micro management style, intimidating and borderline harrassment
Shop foreman/Supervisor (Ancien employé) –  Edmonton, AB12 septembre 2019
Although the compensation is incredible, it doesn't do anything to constantly have your job held above your head, Upper management lacks the intelectual ability to manage. People are promoted not based on experience, but for brown nosing. Only place I have ever worked whereas managers in Mechanical had NO mechanical experience or were not mechanically inclined. Leads to poor decision making process.
