You are a number
Freight Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Melville, SK13 août 2019
Number of employees is adjusted on a weekly basis. So next week you could be layed off.
Also while working you have no way of knowing when you will be home or when you'll be leaving for work.
Great for young/single people.
Avoid if you have/want a family.
Points positifs
Great pay/benifits/pension
Points négatifs
Unpedictable hours

Excellent company to work. nice teams and opportunities.
Project Officer, Accounting Development. (Employé actuel) –  Montréal, QC11 août 2019
There is always an opportunity waiting for the exact person, a career plan that includes your skills, knowledge, and experience outside of the company. silos do not exist and the promotions are worthwhile.

Good pay, but no life.
Equipment Operator (Ancien employé) –  Vancouver, BC9 août 2019
Where do I even start, this company is the definition of hypocrisy, their all about safety but they make you work a night shift till 6 am and then ask you to come back on the same day at 2 in the afternoon with barely any sleep, unreal. They get guys to work 10 straight days without a day off, and then you got management breathing down your neck 24/7 waiting for you to make a mistake . Don’t work here if you want a life

Terrible. Militant. No life.
Railroad Conductor/Yardmaster/Yard Foreman/Manager (Ancien employé) –  Ontario, Canada6 août 2019
Good pay but it’s blood money. Cannot book sick, cannot have a life. Will work nights, weekends and holidays exclusively for at least the first 10 years. Management run company like dictators. Brutal place to work.
Points négatifs
Too much to list

IT at CN Rail is ongoing major changes that make the current environment not pleasant.
SENIOR IT PROJECT-PROGRAM MANAGER (Ancien employé) –  Montréal, QC30 juillet 2019
A lot of people were let go in the past months. However generous packages were also given.
Unfortunately, until the situation stabilizes it is difficult to recommend CN as an employer. In the past it use to be a nice place to work. Those days will hopefully come back once the things settle down.

Terrible
HEO (Employé actuel) –  Brampton, ON27 juillet 2019
No room for advancement, they only promote family and friends...especially at the Brampton location. Managers are terrible, supervisors target people they don’t like. You will have no weekends off, no holidays off not even Christmas Day and most likely be working nights...and the union is garbage.
Points positifs
The pay is ok but the union takes a large portion of it

Great money, feels like prison.
Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Kamloops, BC17 juillet 2019
Money is great, but your never home to spend it. Managment is a joke, they go out of there way to try and make your life miserable. They lie, always saying one thing to your face, then lying behind your back to set you up for punishment. There demerit system is a joke. They are never equal for person to person or male to female. They hire females to get them to training in Winnipeg to get it to look good. But they make sure they don’t leave with a job. If you do, the managment target you to try and get rid of you. Upper managment is a gambling addict, another one is a coke head and then there is the steroid monkey.

Great job but terrible work/life balance
Electrical Apprentice (Employé actuel) –  Vaughan, ON8 juillet 2019
Workload is great, pay is amazing. The supervisors aren’t the most knowledgeable when it comes to locomotives and that can sometimes be frustrating.

The work/life balance is a huge issue depending on your lifestyle. Currently no kids but it’s difficult for individuals with families. Might take over 20 years to get a day shift with weekends off.
Points positifs
Pay is amazing, coworkers are fine
Points négatifs
Shifts could be better

Most toxic place to work
Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Prince George, BC8 juillet 2019
Keep away from this company. Money might be nice but not at the expense of your life. There are so many people that work at cn that operate heavy machinery that are under the influence of some sort of narcotic that the public should be afraid and everything gets hidden from the public eye.

Most fun I ever had at a job...
Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Vancouver, BC16 juin 2019
Loved the work more than any job I have ever had. Nothing was more satisfying than switching cars on a hot day or night. But eventually left because of the work schedule and unionized environment. Once you have a enough seniority to hold a schedule, you are forced to become an engineer and must be available for calls on your days off so you can't go anywhere. It's always union against management and visa versa which is unfortunate but a result of the history of railroading. It's getting a lot better and if I were younger I might have stuck it out but I like my time off. But for a lot of guys and gals who love the railroad culture and money, they wouldn't have it any other way. Just wish there was more middle ground. On a personal level, I did my job without complaining and never had a problem with management.
Points positifs
Pay and job satisfaction.
Points négatifs
Work schedule and often negative environment.

Poor environment
Diesel Engine Mechanic Apprentice (Ancien employé) –  Edmonton, AB11 juin 2019
Dirty environment. Management lies sense the interview. Depressing culture. Others try to pull you down and take credit for your work and blame you for their mistakes, from co-workers to management.

Job security

High paying job with some sacrifice
Conductor (Employé actuel) –  Winnipeg, MB3 juin 2019

Conductor (Ancien employé) –  Edmonton, AB2 juin 2019
OJT (on job trainers ) get paid $400 a day to do nothing Company wants employs but union tries to get rid of good employs as so that company keeps on hiring new people & the lazy OJT gets paid for training, best company worst union i suggest company should take charge of qualifying employs so that company can make profit & have higher percentage of retention.great company spends lot of money on training crew but union sucks.
Points positifs
good pay
Points négatifs
worlds worst employee union
