I spent a happy 34 year career working for the Coast Guard
Pastry Chef / Head Chief (Ancien employé) –  Dartmouth, Nova Scotia15 août 2019
I got to meet lots of different people from all over the country and people from all over the world while working on an Arctic Class Ice Breaker in the Arctic for 6 years of my career. I have many fond memories of my time at sea over my 34 year career and think of the many people I worked with often.

Toxic workplace with lots of bullys.
Engineer (Employé actuel) –  St. John's, NL11 août 2019
The job itself is good, 4 weeks away and 4 weeks home, all equal time, the job security is great, you know you have a job to go back to every shift. But boy the toxic workplace is crazy, enough to ruin your mental health, you go away to sea for 28 days and it seems like alot of people including supervisors would rather see you fail then succeed, unless you want to play the part and bully everyone else. Terrible place to work because of the toxicity and extremely low pay.
Points positifs
Job security, room for advancment, lots of training.
Points négatifs
Toxic workplace, low salary, living away from home with no communication at all on arctic going vessels.

Not for the faint of heart
Retired navigation officer, instructor (Ancien employé) –  Sydney, NS6 novembre 2018
A life at sea is not for everyone. Often the working and living conditions can be brutal for days on end due to vicious storms with high winds and mountaious seas. The isolation of shipboard life combined with living in clise contact can often be difficult. Onw wpuld think that harassment and abuse would be acthing of the padt but can still be encountered at sea. You have to have a thick skin. There is no such thing as a sickday on a ship at sea, everone works long shifts for up to 4 weeks at avtime, perhaps longer.
Having said that, the rewards can be great with goid oay and excellent trsining opportunities your chances for advancement can be fair.

Job security

Good place to work
Steward (Ancien employé) –  st.john's, nl1 février 2018
Love my job as a steward onboard ccg, however waiting 3 months in between my last trip is a hard way to make a living with a wife and family. Moneywise the pay should be much more than the base salary.

Enjoyable but tough.

I spent 28 days onboard a midsized icebreaker. The work was very demanding, but enjoyable. Though it was loud and cramped with regards to living quarters

all work no pay
cook/deckhand (Employé actuel) –  B.C. coast21 septembre 2017
I don't recommend working for this employer. You spend half your life out of town and there is no possessive acknowledgement for a job well done but there are plenty of superiors to let you know if the job is not being done to their standards. Very little training at first but if you stay a long time or make it to full time training is available.
Points positifs
they feed you
Points négatifs
away from home a lot

Only do this job for 6 years
MCTSO (Employé actuel) –  NATIONAL3 août 2017
The "golden handcuffs" is what working for the federal government is like. The money can be very good, with a lot of option for working overtime and making a lot more money. HOWEVER, management sucks, workplace culture sucks, no room for advancement, 12 hour shifts suck, hardest part of the job is dealing with people who don't do their job, sleep or on the internet all the time instead of doing their job. No training, no room for advancement, lots of money .... money doesn't buy happiness
