Canada Malt is a great place to work with BBQ's, "lunch n learn's" and great management. The only drawback is the inability to accommodate overtime and future jobs since it is such a strict union. THEY TAKE SAFETY VERY SERIOUSLY, you will be provided with all equipment necessary to do a job safely.
Productive place to work overall
-A typical day at work you run machine and troubleshoot errors, ship orders and do sanitation at end of shift.
-I've learned that there is more to being an Operator, its not a job for everyone. The start can be tough, you grow into the role gradually and adapt but eventually you will find out that the job gets "boring and repititive" as time goes on. I've got absolute respect to those who spend a lifetime being an Operator or work long term as Operator.
-Management does their best to lead the team well and cater to the needs of operations.
-Work culture is good. Operators are hardworking and put in their best. Job is extremely physical. Be ready if you intend to be an Operator at CMC. Operators swear frequently at work. There is a loud outpouring of the tongue everyday at work. Its the work culture I guess, as the company permits continuous swearing at their facility.
-Hardest part of the job is heavy lifting throughout the day and not getting relief when you need it because you are short-staffed and Supervisors don't do anything about it. Sometimes a coworker will refuse to swap with you. Also, you are not allowed to sit down except during break time even if you are weak and have sore muscles. I find this disturbing!
-Enjoyable part of the job is when the machine runs well and the daily shipments have been sent out to customers. Also the lunch and trainings too are enjoyable.
Pros
-It pays the bills, gives you a sense of purpose as we meet a need, you gain skills, you are challenged to be a better operator, you are trained to be a leader.
Cons
Job is extremely stressful,Be ready to live with muscle soreness, joint pain, lower Back pain, all through the year. You can work first day of the week and your body gets messed up and you continue working through the remaining days feeling drained,You constantly feel drained throughout the week, extending into weekend,You can't have a normal life with this job,Gossiping and bullying is normal at CMC, getting thrown under the bus is to be expected too because some coworkers behave as if they own the place and like to slander peoples' names,You will be worked to exhaustion, have no relief on some days,You work and exchange hands, job isn't streamlined enough.Job is extremely stressful and some coworkers are toxic to deal with.
Student Operator/ Temporary Grain Inspector in Thunder Bay, ON Demanding labour with great industry exposure.
Working at Canada Malt. was an interesting challenge. The days could feel long and at times it is up to you to find work, wether it be cleaning areas of the factory that need it or servicing some machines. Collaboration is key as well. Being able to effectively identify problem in the workplace and either handle them or report them to the proper staff is crucial to ensuring a smooth work day. Not everyday is busy but don't expect the down periods to last long.
