No planning and organization
Working at Campbell Construction was an interesting experience this past year. The hiring process was casual and the two individuals who interviewed me asked casual questions without an detail and put me on a job the next day which made the process easy to get working. However, working on some sites are better and more organized then others. However it is challenging to move up in the organization as there is no formal career path and it appears the owners son has been placed in a role due to his family name even though he has a drug addiction and drinking problem. There also seems to be a lot of reactionary decision making on some sites and employees are yelled at and not treated with respect especially if you are a woman. It was an interesting time working at the company, they have lots of work and union wages are great but it is poorly run and disorganized.

fast paced, hard headed, strength is important but will power gets you through the day
most usual days working with Cambell would be to just show up and already know what you were doing yesterday, as all your co workers will already be on the top level waiting for you. Personally, i learnt that safety is a must as a very green employee starting out, proper lifting, safely lifting and putting items down with care rather than careless. Management is tough, but at the same time... its a very stressful job but that doesn't always mean that we should take anger out on each-other. I found the hardest part of the job was keeping my calm while getting yelled at by a stranger who calls himself my boss, as you shouldn't abuse authority. by far the most enjoyable part of this job was your co workers because they are like brothers.

No leadership, no support and a double standard
Working on site is tough, people eat lunch every day with dirty hands there is no standards and no washing stations until there was a pandemic. The leaders expect you to work, however they are no where to be found, show up on site, but you can't pickup your paycheck from the office and they will not be there to support you. Standards for site safety only show up after a few issues arise and there is no planning or awareness for the front line crews. Lots of people to boss you around, but nobody to lead your team, nobody to protect staff and the construction population. This is the calm before the storm and a site outbreak is only waiting to happen. With anxiety at an all time high and staff worried about infecting their family members it is a challenging time and whoever is the owner is not acting as leader and the developers are just as bad.

This company blows
Worst ever company to work for.
The owner only cares about money

You can't trust co-workers

You can't trust management

This company cares more about production than safety.

The foremen are poorly trained and throw anyone under the bus to cover up their inability to lead/delegate and have no idea how about conflict resolution.

No leadership and concern for safety
Job sites are sketchy as heck, no leadership during a crisis and no sense of safety or guidance. Having 200 guys crammed in a tower with no hand washing station, just a push soap dispenser with no water seems like a crisis waiting to happen. Worked on yates st and nobody is following protocol, no safety meetings, My super is not worried and an entitled uneducated fam member and basically forcing me to work or we gonna be fired unless the government shuts us down, despite being lots of people working close together. Let's be real, our industry is full of some of the most toxic and ignorant people who lack basic knowledge, information and overall awareness in the last 50 years, can we really expect them to act sensibly during a global pandemic?

Learning challenges
Campbell is an inclusive employer that promotes employees with learning disabilities and enjoy riding the slopes during work hours. It is one of the few places where you can have an addiction and get hired and promoted especially if you are a famly member! The company does not value intelligence and education but that is a comon trait among all family members. The bar is low and arrogance is high!
Points positifs
Repairing old work, rebuilding forms, fixing supers mistakes
Points négatifs
Leadership, GM, organization

office propaganda and clueless communications
WOW, might want to get a new communications department, did this person graduate highschool? anyone has the right to judge a company, their products and their boss, it is called freedom of speech. considering this office worker does not even know that campbell is a private company just indicates how clueless the people are working here. also who eats cheetoos in canada, everyone knows its hawkins. all companies fail, its just a matter of time, thats how teh cheesie crumbles

Don't drink the coolaid
go take a visit to tapestry, perhaps one of the most disorganized job sites I have ever worked on and was happy to get moved to cap park and work with someone who knows what they are doin. nobody in their right mind can say that place is organized on time or Makin money. Don't drink too much of the coolaid probably good reason people are quoting the company. Who's next?
Points positifs
Lots of work, cool projects, chip, patch and rebuild
Points négatifs
Inexperienced staff, no training, no planning

Fast paced, challenging, fun environment
A significant number of employees have been working here for well over 10, 15 & 20 yrs (including office emps) and that definitely says something about the Company. They have been in business since 1964 and are so successful at what they do, that they are now the Largest General Contractor on Vancouver Island.

Most of their Foremen move into Superintendent positions, as these positions are rarely hired from outside of the company so there is definitely room for a new Material Handler to be hired and move through the ranks of Carp Apprentice, Carpenter, Lead Hand, Foreman then finally Superintendent. You just need to have a positive attitude, have pride in your work and strive to do your best everyday...Campbell does not promote workers who stand around, lack drive and dedication for building things, have an "I'm all that and a bag of Cheetos" attitude, nor do they have the patience for workers who can't seem to come to work on a consistent basis. I've never heard so many excuses why you can't make it work each week! If you don't like working in the Construction Industry, then change your career.

A lot of workers forget that Campbell is a Unionized Company, it's not privatized!! Therefore, if you want to complain about wages, lack of training, lack of an interview, Benefits, Pensions or your co-workers (brothers) etc. then you need to talk to your Union about your displeasure. Campbell doesn't have any control over what the Union provides to its members and new employees are dispatched to the company from the Union job board. So if you're not pro-union then maybe working

Points positifs
Annual Xmas party with free gifts, Opportunity for advancement for dedicated employees, being a part of building the future of Victoria, Wages are well within standards, more Statutory Holidays than BC regulates etc.

Company promotes staff with special needs!
Working on Yates St an absolute disaster of a job site, constant patchwork for incompetent decision making. Watch out for the owner's son who doesn't know anything about construction, has anger issues, might be because he isn't smart enough to pass the carpentry program. Could say the company supports people who have"special needs". Whatever you do stay away from this building, random patchwork, absolute confusion in the job site and poor quality all round.

Dazed and confused
Management cannot agree on anything. They want you to break health and safety standards to get things done even if people get injured along the way. Standing on a milk crate is not acceptable unless you are being yelled at to get it done without a step stool and they don't care how. Owners play favorites and the more you pander and gossip to management the better. If you are not liked them forget about getting promoted. If you are a family member you will get preferential treatment, promoted and moved into management. The people who run this company and those who are going to run it next are only in the position because of their family name and they aren't smart enough to do anything on their own. The smartest people in the company are handcuffed by Idiocracy. It's a shame b cause the company could have a lot of potential. In the end they aren't much better than Farmer, and to blind to see theel disorganization in front of them.

be careful
the best part about working at campbell is learning how not to do things. management will make random decisions only to go back to what they were doing in the first place, lots of micromanagement by people who have no clue what they are doing. promotion is based on relationships not work ethic. use the company to get your ticket, learn from their disasters and get the heck out. the company could use some constructive feedback but the people that run this place think they know everything and really dont know that much about anything. times have changed and the company is stuck in the past, a legend in their own mind

People come last
CCL = Clients come last although it is similar to PCL where people come last. I've worked my fair share of construction, and some jobs are better than others. But CCL is by far the worst. They can't finish a job on time and management will throw workers under the bus any chance they get & lie about it. They build relationships around lies, excuses and a trail of broken promises. For a million dollar company they are extremely cheap, management cuts costs on essential items needed for safety (which they constantly preach we need) but fail to provide, so that there’s more money in their own pocket at the end of the day. Save yourself the time and don’t apply here.

The overall atmosphere is one of poor planning, laziness and ineffective management
Unless you are offered the opportunity to fire 90% of the managers within this company and start with a nearly clean slate do not work for Campbell. Their inability to interact appropriately on all levels; within their own ranks, with architects, clients and their sub-trades marks this company as one in severe need of massive restructuring. The superintendents and management team are terribly unqualified, wildly unprofessional, apparently having had no training whatsoever in their respective disciplines. A small handful of their pm's, labourers and carpenters have the rare ability to be both capable and driven. The remainder of the workers do not care one way or the other, possibly driven to this extreme by their management team.
Points positifs
Decent pay and nobody knows what you do so there is very little discipline is ever enforced, As such if you’d like to do next to nothing and get paid for it this would be a great company.
Points négatifs
No long term planning for manpower placement, Poor overall job scheduling, Extremely low benefit and compensation package. Poorly organized sites, Poorly maintained equipment and tools, Very little cooperation between the different aspects of the company, occasionally bordering on hostility.

Holy sweet baby jesus this place stinks
Let me begin by saying that since this is the biggest GC in town I expected the company to be one of the highlights--nay, the crowing jewel in my construction career. However, I was horribly, terrible, tragically disappointed.

When I got dropped off at the job site I got out of the car and the smell of the porta-potty knocked me off my feet and the stench followed me throughout the day as it clung to my cloths. One of my biggest fears is using the porta-potty and the locks on the door do not work. The entire time I was using the potty I was paranoid that someone was going to swing the door open and expose me at my most vulnerable state! Along with having busted locks the toilet paper was equivalent to using sand paper that was paper thin. It took me half a role to get the job done and left me with a significant pain due to the chafing.

On the flip side... having the opportunity to take a leak off the top floor of the building was pretty amazing. Normally I would give a company at least 3 stars for an experience like this, but the company operates in a real drug neighborhood with a lot of needles on the job site.

The owner and superintendents were unfriendly and frankly rude. Looking back now, though, I can hardly blame them as they dealt with some of the remarkable idiocy we witnessed on the job site from the poor planning, lack of structure, disorganization, mistakes, and constant confusion that I watched while attempting to fix everyone's mistakes.
Points positifs
Taking a leak off the top of a concrete tower
Points négatifs
Management confusion, stinky bathrooms

Worst company ever
benefit - got a free shirt
negative - superintendents are a bunch of puppets that cant think for themselves

Advice for management - empower your employees and dont make them be glorified baby sitters. respect and recognition from the top down should be better. when rolling out new job sites should teach superintendents how to run a job site rather then dump them on site to figure things out. should also establish some structure not based on tenure of favorite employee of the month. employees are treated terribly overworked and under-appreciated by an owner who is in way over his head and has no leadership skills. absolute chaos on the job site. not to mention they change plans on site 3 times in the last month due to unrealistic expectations coupled with incompetent coworkers. this company is based on being a brown noser not performance and you will hate your life here, i could not think of a worse job or place to work. people are disposable just like the their product.

Dont work here if you are a woman
I find that the work environment is horrible if you are a woman or not a ticketed carpenter. But frankly becoming a carpenter is what you become if you could not succeed at anything else in life. The employees are not given a performance review annually and there is no room for promotion or any training plan no matter how many times you ask for opportunities within the organization. If you are not a ticketed carpenter there is no respect on the job site especially if you are a woman. The best thing you can do is leave to another company who cares and looks to develop their employees. All the managers and superintendents are living in the past and do not look at the process but point fingers at employees to pass on the blame. Managers do not even care to effectively evaluate employees for potential promotion. One of the best opportunities with this company is all the connections you make, it opens doors so you can go work somewhere else.

Typical union lazy mentality
This is not the company if you are looking for a life long career. Come work for a couple of years, get your ticket and education paid for and get out. Management is clueless and the owner is a crusty old person living in the past against change, they are not outgoing or genuine by any means. Nobody is there to help you, from other foreman, supervisors, or project managers. The company is one giant mess they pick and choose who they want to do what. No learning or training. Management on my job site was so out of touch with reality and the working man that it felt as though you were walking on eggshells. Had to watch your back every moment of the work day. Could not let your guard down for a moment. Very stressful. Never new what nonsense was going to come at you next. Get your ticket and get out.
