run mostly by a bunch of white middle class who pretend to support a multicultural workplace.- so sad;(
blacks, hispanics, asians not welcome here. cater only to indigenous addicts because they know it's easy way to get gov $ .

rampant nepotism., bullying, our poor deserve better.

Here, there is a collaborative management style and you'll have autonomy in your work day.
Management meets with you monthly to ask how they can support you in your work and yearly, the company sends out a satisfaction survey to their employees. Throughout the year employees get updates on how the concerns brought up in the survey are being addressed.


You'll have a lot of autonomy in your work day here for e.g. deciding when to take your break and what tasks you want to focus on for that day.

There is also emphasis on employee health here. The benefits are great and employees are encouraged to use sick days for appointments or even for "mental health days."

Interesting work it was right up my alley for my education and I enjoyed it most days. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was easy to get to and from. They care about the people and the issues at hand. It was an eye opener to the issues we have here in Edmonton’s inner city

Toxic management and worst racism among the staff. Management does favouritism to some staff they like and other staff will be the victims of gossips. They will make you run throughout the houses to work.

My job primarily involved working with high-risk/high-needs youth in their residential program.

PROS:


- Felt fairly compensated for my work -- great benefits package for full-time staff


- Working with the youth was a lot of fun (although there were difficult times -- youth are often physically/verbally aggressive and this can get stressful)


- Generally got along very well with frontline coworkers -- you're working as a team so you develop pretty close bonds.



CONS:


- Management culture is TOXIC here. Like, Chernobyl toxic. Gossip, favouritism, etc. runs rampant. Not uncommon to hear management berating colleagues/name-calling behind people's backs. Horribly unprofessional. No real recourse in terms of bringing concerns forward as the lack of care seems to run right to the top.


- The lack of support for employees here is appalling. Employees regularly deal with stressful/traumatic situations on the day-to-day and these concerns are typically dismissed. There's a lot of talk about self-care amongst the organization but employees who actually took steps to engage in self-care would be ridiculed or sometimes punished (e.g. not given shifts if part-time)


- This is HARD work. You can leave feeling physically exhausted. Not uncommon to be hit/bitten/otherwise hurt by youth as there were several highly aggressive youth in the program when I worked here.


- Little follow-up/follow-through on training, leading to a lot of poorly/improperly trained employees. Very frustrating to be on shift with someone who was supposed to be trained in crisis interventions but
 - plus...

Good place to begin your field or carrier, or to gain experience. Plenty of job opportunities DEPENDING on what youre willing to do. Management is a joke though.

It can be challenging but very rewarding, the client base bring a lot of different situations for staff to deal with. It can be sometimes a scary place when violence breaks out but there is usually enough staff support to ensure safety.

I was able to learn and also give back to the community working at Boyle Street. I found the hardest part of the job was not able to help everyone or seeing community members struggle. When I worked at Boyle street everyone was amazing and understanding that i was not able to do much due to being pregnant. I love love to work at Boyle Street again.

Terrible management, lack of support from higher ups. My voice was not heard. My spirit was crushed. Supervisions follow their agenda, not yours. They frown upon conflicting opinion.

the hardest part of the job was having to listen to the youth story's and you would like to take them in to help them. i learned that everyone as a story and you have to find out on how you could help. management was also great to work with. the whole team that i worked with were all understanding, you have to have a big heart to work at Boyle street community services.

Poor management. Doesn't truly care about their staff, say they want a work life balance and self care but only if it fits their idea. Poor personal boundaries from managers. Will say they will support you if there is a crisis with a client but won't listen to your voice in how they can best support you. Very toxic work place.

I loved working there for the community members and was it. It was my 2nd yr there. Drop in coordinator never there or on call. Disappointed in how they run this organization.

i had the opportunity to work mostly with Aboriginals and i learnt a lots about their backgrounds i has residents to care for and i love working with my residents

As much as they think they are helpful, only a couple of programs are actually helpful. A high amount of office politics is in play there. The program director was replaced and my position was replaced. The new program director sexually harassed the new person replacing me and she quit. No one in higher positions believed her. Not a good environment. At all. No one believed me for 10 weeks.. from that environment I suffered PTSD and refuse to work for another non profit organization.
