Your work is what you make of it

I was hired at a Boston Pizza franchise in a remote Northern BC location this past March. All things considered, I’ve had an excellent experience thus far. As Boston Pizza restaraunts are independently owned and operated, one must recognize that experiences are likely to differ based on the said store management. Although there didn’t appear to be a formal training plan in place, I really did feel supported by my managers in addition to my fellow colleagues. I believe that the key to my success was my constant communication with my manager. As a result, I was promoted to expo to bartender in just one week. I was hired under the basis of part time work however within 2 short weeks, I was awarded with a full time schedule that I still have to date. I work the closing shift 5pm-1:30am (ish) and if you can believe it, my shifts almost always go by super quick. If you are resourceful, customer service driven and like to keep busy, this would be a great place to work. My particular restaurant is generous enough to offer a free meal to the closer however there is an unwritten expectation that you eat on the fly (there are no breaks). For those willing to invest the effort, your earnings potential is quite impressive as $200/day+ tips are not unheard of. My biggest piece of constructive feedback would be communication (or lack thereof) between shifts. As I said before, a really great place to work and I would definitely recommend!

Points positifs

Free meals, excellent earning potential (tips), flexible hours, management empowers staff to do the right thing, comfortable dress code

Points négatifs

No benefits, no breaks, communication breakdowns, very late nights

A Very Bad Place To Work

suffered two concussions working there & received 1 day off of work for them, did not receive tip pool despite being told i would receive it, was demoted to dishwasher shortly after being hired because all their other dishwashers had quit & they decided it would be easier to demote me than to finish training me, received almost no help from kitchen staff on dishes despite constantly having to step into the kitchen to help them when it was busy, everyone was bad.

Points positifs

none. literally nothing was good about working at boston pizza

Points négatifs

I Was 15 & 1 Month After My 1st Concussion I was scheduled for, A 3hr Shift that became an 8hr shift, where I sliced my finger open on steel wool, Almost fainted, and only got to go home at 12AM ‘cause I was 15 and, It is illegal to work minors after 12AM in AB

Absolute Nightmare

Absolutely horrible. I was trained in being a delivery driver, dishwasher, line cook, and pasta and never once did I get a wage increase. Minimum wage and they used and abused me for it. Everyone was so mean and cruel. Management was just as mean. I’d come home every day in a severe amount of physical pain from the standing with none of those standing mats, and the extreme level of physical work they demanded. Never ever work there. Don’t let your kids work there either. This is an unacceptable work place that should be reported for the level of verbal abuse and lack of compensation.

Points positifs

Literally nothing

Points négatifs

Absolutely everything

run as fast as you can

the manager at this location didn’t understand how to manage a restaurant properly. there was wayyy too much favouritism and being skipped numerous times for tables. the coworkers there are rude and if not rude, there’s some kind of secret animosity. i left because i wanted peace of mind. i left a month ago and still haven’t been paid

Stressful and underpaid and unappreciating

A typical day at Boston pizza typically starts almost exactly how it ends; cleaning and preparing food. The only difference is that the end of your shift comes as a surprise, as they cut shifts short. You could be scheduled for an 8 hour shift but only work for as little as 3 hours. Not a good place to work if you are looking to support yourself in any sense. I learned that, in certain places, your voice will not be heard. If you have an opinion varying at all from the standard, it is crushed. Management is strict and finds any and every way to cut corners so they don’t have to pay their employees as much. The workplace culture is toxic and they don’t allow for much personal variety. The hardest part of the job was getting hours, and the most enjoyable part was seeing to customers’ satisfaction.

Points positifs

Gratuity and 50% off food

Points négatifs

Barely any hours, early cuts, toxic management, exclusionary coworkers

You meet so really hard working people

It is a job you get to support yourself whole trying to find something else, they do not help staff with trying to get into higher roles, and management lies when asked if others staff being promoted, i Personally had the gm/ store franchisee representative. Tell me when I ask them if there’s anything they were going to offer me for me to stay she said no and get luck. Everybody leaves, but they always end up coming back. I have not gone back since.

Points positifs

Free drinks and a $20 meal if you are a supervisor

Points négatifs

Long hours, under paid, over worked, under appreciated

Cook at four locations across western Canada

Kitchen (heart of house,HOH)was a fun place to work. Typically you would start before a rush and leave afterwards. A computer routing and order system installed greatly improved efficiency, becoming more like a fast food business, just with a bar. If you were hard working and available, there was “full time” pay periods but the days and or hours worked were always different week after week although good management would try and accommodate your life situations. There were “mistakes” with food and even though it’s against company policy, the supervisor may let the staff eat the mistakes free of charge as it would be thrown out anyway. The lounge decore promotes a sports culture as there are company sports teams at some locations and many of the managers and supervisors are highly versed in sports media. On some occasions i was even invited to attend professional sports matches with many other employees in attendance. Many local sports teams would eat here as much of the menu is team friendly and quick. The problems here is that the company expects you spend 3 to 4 hours per month on the company learning website unpaid on your own time and if you don’t complete the learning on time, they could cut your shifts. No allowance for constantly washing uniforms at home on own time. Also, front of the house (FOH) management came and gone like the wind , meaning many with “sticky fingers” and gambling addictions (in house VLTs) where kitchen tip outs were typically the most affected from this as much of this was cash. Also some managers had anger management issues. They -

Points positifs

50 percent off their expensive menu when working

Points négatifs

Quite an unstable work environment at times with half the staff 16 years of age or even younger

Went downhill fast

This used to be a great place to work for the original owners. Once it change hands to the new owners it became a toxic place to try and manage. New owners played favorites and provided no help to their managers or staff. Managers worked unpaid overtime every week and were consistently disrespected. Avoid at all costs, there are plenty of other jobs that will respect you.

Points positifs

I no longer work there

Points négatifs

Some of the good staff were still there after I left

Worst job I ever had.

What is the best part of working at the company? Some of the co-workers are great people What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The company is poorly managed, my boss played favorites and if you weren't her favorite she would cut your hours and give them to individuals she liked. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? If it's a busy day it's normal for people to be yelling including at each other do to stress, and the gossiping and work group chats are tiring What is a typical day like for you at the company? My boss didn't like me so I wasn't aloud to work in the building, I was forced to do deliveries and sit in my hot car sometimes for 10 hours straight getting 0 deliveries. Also delivery drivers don't get payed my the hour.

Hours not guaranteed

The vibe and community at work is alright. Mostly everyone is kind and helpful. only downside is the unguarunteed hours. if it isn't busy you just won't start and they can keep you for hours just sitting there not being paid to be told to go home because its not busy, wasting a whole day.

Points positifs

tips

Points négatifs

no hours

I got a good sense of thriving in multitasking and production, along with quality and cleanliness

What is the best part of working at the company?Getting tips between paycheques and the camaraderie with my coworkersWhen we finally got an excellent managerWhat is the most stressful part about working at the company?Coworkers with bad attitudesNot being paid out tips that are owed by the managersWhat is the work environment and culture like at the company? It’s very clean and a lot of fun. I love multitasking and you can get so much done and thrive. If you like that kind of thing which I do.What is a typical day like for you at the company?Well, I show up I put on my apron, Wash my hands and then find my list of things I have to prep and just go through the list getting a few things done at onceTake a break when I need itChat with my coworkers, help each other out understanding recipesSometimes we got to sample the dishes so that we would know what it look like and how it was supposed to taste or if someone made a mistake on an order they would bring it back to the staff in the kitchen to have on a break

Zero job security

They hire employees and ask them to take all the time and learn things. But they fire people without even giving a proper reason to fire you. So unfair and unethical management team at White rock Boston Pizza. I'm not recommending this work place for anyone.

Meh

Decent. The staff is awesome, the management is ok. They tend to pick favourites, which could lead you to less hours and bad sections if you're not careful. Very lucrative summers, it can be really fun too. You have to stick up for yourself a bit or the management might disregard you. Good part time job but don't expect this to be your only source of income if you want be able to pay your bills during the winter.

Points positifs

Busy and lucrative summers, casual enviroment, great staff.

Points négatifs

Favouritism, gossip, childish enviroment.

The worst restaurant I’ve worked for in 12 years of experience.

What is the best part of working at the company?I liked the other staff members. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Poor management and systems that set staff up to fail. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Terrible. A direct quote is “if you don’t like it. Quit.”What is a typical day like for you at the company?Stressful, aggravation and a fake smile

Server

Overall a good place to work but if you mess up management (mostly GM and AGM) like to threaten shifts for any reason (mostly when they had a bad day or something) and they hire a lot of family which they get treated perfect and never have to do anything

Points positifs

50% when working off meals

Points négatifs

Long hours, management is not nice
