This was my first time ever working in hotels and they taught me everything I needed to know about working the front desk! The one in Valemount specifically is great for seasonal work, they have a competitive winter and summer season.
First off, I refuse to go against my beliefs and how I was raised. I am not a dishonest man. This property is not a BWPlus property, but still had the sign up, confusing my guests upon arrival, as many guest know their BW loyalty benefits. Most properties will notify of Hot Tub or Pool unavailability during the days it is closed, but this property never made any effort, and we were instructed to notify only if asked. The hot tubs were due to close for months, upsetting many guests upon check in. The property also underwent a few GM's before my arrival, and the trend was the same during my time. At the end, many staff benefits were being taken away, while raising employee expenses such as staff meals and staff accom rent. They were making rules up as they went along at this property, some in conflict with employment standards. I was also incorrectly paid, where they were trying to pay me as low of a wage when I departed, which I know how to protect myself professionally. I eventually got paid the proper amount. This property ended my dismissed me from my job and had the audacity to mark it as "quit". I put in my week notice and they were trying to convince me what the labor laws were, where I had to notify them of what the labor laws and employment standards rules were regarding job termination, regardless if it was initiated by the employer or employee. Otherwise, I learned a lot and would loved to have stayed if I did not lose my mother and had to travel back home, which my manager seemed to take personally and immediately became hostile, as they did not take employees - plus...
You know that if a company follows certain standard and they're serious about it, you will never go wrong. You will get to improve your knowledge with the set of standards that you have to follow. Company is very serious on making the staff comfortable as well. Likewise, they like to do team buildings, team potlucks, team parties, etc. You will also get a insurance card after 90 days of working with them.

This position is most suited to people who are extremely outgoing and can see the best in any situation. Numerous interactions with guests and employees alike. A typical day can vary depending on which shift you are put on. Mornings are usually your checkouts, days are checking in, and nights are for financial reports. This position challenges the employee as they have to multi task a variety of task at once (ex numerous phone calls while checking in people at the same time). The position is usually by yourself in which it can be difficult to manage all things at once. You are the front line and the punching bag for all guests that have problems. You WILL face many difficult people who may not be understanding and it is your job to either calm them down or just take the brute force of what choice words they will say to you. The workplace culture feels that everyone is almost independent but working together to keep customer satisfaction a high. Sometimes you may be accompanied by management if they have business on that day but many times you will be independent by yourself. You will have to make decisions at times that are sensitive and it your call whether to do what you feel is right.
long hours and potential soul shattering difficult people
This job is fast paced, involved a high level of communication and multitasking skills. co-workers are phenomenal. They offer room to move up to better positions.
The staff and management are easy to get along with. The training is done hands on, as well as through computer simulation. Every staff member from each individual department would communicate effectively and efficiently.
I started at Best Western in 2014, I worked there for just under two years. I would say that it is a good place to work, I truly enjoyed working with my coworkers. My initial immediate managers were awesome people, they cared about their employees. The owners at that time ended up selling the hotel to a corporation, and the months following I seen a decline in morale, everyone started to hate their job and the place as a whole. The new GM came in, and she doesn't seem like a warm friendly person, it's always been my opinion that especially in the hospitality industry you should be warm and acknowledging to both internal and external guests, and it helps the lower people feel appreciated in their roll, resulting in upbeat attitudes towards guests. So in closing, although there may have been some issues with this location, that is not a reflection of BW as a whole, which was a decent company to work for.
small reception at front desk with about 2-3 staff working. Learnt how to deal with guest and register them with hotel PMS system. Learnt to deal with guest concerns. Enjoyed resolving guest issues which would be the most difficult part of the job, however this was most satisfying as well
If you like the kind of job that requires you to do the same thing every day, this is where you want to be. It is very difficult to move into management, and once you get promoted you're work load triples. If you can handle high levels of stress, and having to do the work of multiple people alone, you were made for the Prim Rose Hotel
Responsible for handling room inventory, rates and promotion packages Maintained third party room inventory to increase revenue Handled guest concerns on-line and in person effectively to meet both the customer and hotels satisfaction Established and implemented operational procedures and policy Screened, hired and training new employees and preformed performance reviews Promoted and made guest awareness of the Best Western Rewards programs and curtain promotions Oversaw group inventory, prepared invoices and collected payments
Managing & overseeing employees
I loved working with the people at the Best Western. We were a tight family and very supportive of one another.
Horrible place to work if you plan on ever going anywhere in life. Management treats you terribly and scolds you for everything you do wrong but never once raises an ounce of appreciation for anything you should happen to do correctly. All around horrible management, but everyone else...? Amazing....
This was a great place to work and grow as a person. There are lots of amazing people that both work there and come as guests. The most enjoyable part of the job was getting to know the guests individually as well as the co-workers.
