Communication and teamwork are a huge part of this job. Staff was nice. The days can get very repetitive in hospitality. But overall a fun place to work. Although you do work alone most of the time, teamwork is still essential.
The work is very physically demanding and you are often required to do way more than is possible for your shift; the pay is insulting for the amount of work you do. Very little training and the hotel manager was really awful; a very arrogant man who tried to intimidate people. The way employees were treated by management was unacceptable at times.I was fired after I had a panic attack and had to leave early; they claimed it was that my quality of work wasn't good enough, but I had never heard that until the incident with having to leave early for a legitimate mental health crisis.
Get out early if you start early
I was not hired for what I applied. I speak 3 languages fluently and instead because I didn't have the look they wanted I did not get hired for it. Was overworked and not paid well. When I went on maternitiy leave they gave my job to someone else and was placed in a different section upon my return. The managers looked down on us and those with seniority simply ignored management and went over their heads directly to the boss.
Pick up more shifts when people called in sick.
Paid horribly and no benefits. And never paid properly for overtime
This property was very challenging and felt like the Owner had no faith in their employees. When you hire positions, you as an Owner should allow them to do their job. If you feel like you want to run your own hotel, there is no need to hire anyone else. Operations should be managed by someone with experience in that field and have more faith in those you hired.

I found there was very poor management while working at the Best Western in Okotoks, AB. There were multiple times where we were given trouble because we had listened to our supervisor over an issue, but our supervisor had not been told how to deal with the issue but the blame always goes downhill. The manager would get angry very easily and on multiple occasions would yell at his employees, almost every situation that arose was dealt with very, VERY poorly. There was constant gossip going on between the staff causing a toxic environment. The management expected you to get far too much done in the sad amount of time they allowed. The hours were sad, some weeks we would each get two shifts, not even full 8 hour shifts, some weeks we would have to work up to 7 days in a row all very long days. There was never a balance with this job, I found that myself as well as other staff suffered in their home lives due to the stress of the job. I would never recommend working here to anyone that I care about.
Poor management, poor treatment of the staff, horrible hours
Most days started with a meeting with all the room attendants, then we would gather our supplies and get to work cleaning the rooms. We would start with our individual rooms to clean and as we finished, we would clean as a team until all the rooms on the lists were clean. It was steady and tiring work, but I found it manageable. I learned a lot about cleaning as well as customer service, making sure to do as the individual wanted. Management was focused and instructive, giving helpful feedback as necessary. For the most part, my co-workers were good with teamwork, there were exceptions to some who would prefer not to share their weight and understand how to compromise. However, overall my co-workers were quite agreeable. The hardest part of the job for me was the deep-cleans, which were extensive cleaning of every room to meet with company standards. This task was difficult for me because of the great length of time needed to complete. Many would work in a single room and it would still take hours longer than any other regular clean. However, when we did finish a room, there was a great sense of accomplishment. The most enjoyable part of my job was the satisfying feeling that came with having successfully cleaned a room.
Sometimes too short of shifts, sometimes too long
Since I've worked at Best Western, I can truly say it is the best work environment I have encountered, and gladly been a part of. I've learnt may new skills and found a passion for Hospitality that I never knew existed within myself. I'm happy to say that I have stumbled upon a career I certainly enjoy. We are a smaller hotel, so we are independently owned and operated. I am a jack of all trades within the hotel so I am able to pitch in where I am needed and thats how I get my hours. Everything is based off of occupancy, which I was not aware at first. Management is good and we have a well oiled team, every housekeeper finishes within the time frame they are given. Even if they happen to fall behind, we work as a team and get the rooms done together. I enjoy working hear, and look forward to where it brings me in the future.
Great environment, support from management and co-workers.
Hours are based off occupancy, communication through the employees could be improved.
