Because you are the only face the customer sees, you ARE the face of the company. When the company fails and things are out of your control, it is still your face that the customer associates with their issues.
low rates of pay; no advancement; no compensation for hard work

I have been working for Bell for few years and moved around few different dept within the network team. Overall the company is great, it has its standards and practices like other big corporations out there. If you are looking to make big changes or create/build something this is not the right place for it (there are still lots of old school staff working here), you better off apply to a start up if you like building something from ground up. If you want to learn about processes/operations, this is the right place for you.
As for paid, Bell is a big company the starting salary/hourly rate is not bad, don't expect big raises though, you will get roughly 1-5% raise per year depends on your performance.
