A medial size accounting firm with approximation 4000 employees. There has a lot of partnership company and most of them professional accountant and lawyers.

Terrible place to work. Salary is laughably bad, even if you weren't required to work hundreds of hours of unpaid overtime. Work life balance does not exist. Management is powerfully unhelpful, little praise or feedback of value is ever given. Training given to perform your job as you are expected is woefully inadequate. The job eats you alive until you burn out. Get your hours and get out.

The entire office is friendly, welcoming, and highly skilled. From initial interview to my last day there, I enjoyed every moment at BDO. I recommend this firm, specifically the Edmonton office, to anyone looking for a rewarding position in public practice.

Managers are very passive-aggressive. Hours for audits budget are unrealistic and you need to eat time to be successful. This is difficult when busy season budgeted chargeable hours are 200+ a month. This combined with little praise from managers and partners makes ppl demotivated and burnt out. The salary is low. Use them to get experience and leave after that.

Proper training was severely lacking for me from day one. Equipment was old and never worked properly half the time. Although offices are in Canada, IT help is in Africa and done over the phone or over the computer, so it is impossible to get any kind of help in a timely fashion. You can wait anywhere from 3 days to two weeks for someone to get back to you. At that point, you've figured it out for yourself; extremely frustrating. If there is an issue with a co-worker (bullying or harassing) and you bring it forward, it's just not dealt with. You are expected to work super long days from about Feb - June. This is never mentioned to you in your interview. Maybe they need to hire more staff so that people aren't working 12 - 14 hour days... Sure you may get 4 or 5 weeks of vacation/personal time, but you also can't take it the first part of the year and then the last part of the year you can only take the time, if no one else has booked that time... so it's really not worth it.

Poor management, no motivation to work long hours. Asked us to take a pay cut so the partners can get their pay out is how it seems. Very toxic place that cares more about how many hours you can get in rather than your health

The environment is highly toxic. Senior management micromanage service lines they have no knowledge or experience in. Extremely disrespectful leadership team with a bizarre gossip and rumor culture. High turnover in every sector of the organization. Low pay, little to no respect, high turnover, disregard for client betterment and only regard for their own pockets. Stay away and save yourself the headache

BDO is a very driven organization. They are good in that sense. A company that knows what they want from people. Overall management is very good but not all managers give appropriate
direction. Still a great place to work if you work for the right manager with the right fit for you.

Friendly and helpful co-workers. Great work atmosphere. Very busy in busy season (Jan-April). Good place to learn, but you have to learn fast. Gym and table tennis available.

There has been a lot of turnover in this office, especially the last few months. The primary reason for staff leaving is due to the negative and toxic work environment. Managers gossip and speak negatively about staff members and to other staff members openly which creates a negative environment.

Promotions are based on how much the managers like you and not your work. The managers (especially female managers) want you to suck up to them and the only way that you will be successful is if you do this. If you aren't the managers favorite then you will never be successful.


As mentioned in another post, the Mississauga managers are far more mature and treat staff very well. They remain involved in the files and do not disappear during the audit and only contact staff once they are ready to review the file. If you are given a job opportunity at BDO, do not work in the Burlington office.

It’s a decent place to work at. There is no work life balance. The industry is demanding, and the management is too fast paced and short sighted. It’s nice to get some experience in a short time and move on.

-Partners nice to work for


Cons:

-Company is super cheap

-Not paid enough and no bonuses - they will try to pile as much work on you as possible and not compensate for it

-Management is horrible - office manager is hardly ever accountable for her whereabouts when her team is looking for her, very flighty and unorganized, and moody

-Extra comp days and bonuses taken off the table recently - staff were not happy - company trying to save a buck at the cost of its best employees

Dont apply at AFS Winnipeg. You will definitely regret it. No one lasts there more than 2/3 months. Processors are treated pretty badly & looked down upon, yet they are on the front-line working with the client & winning them over. They don't pay for OT, people are worked to death & the salary is a joke. Management & existing senior staff do not treat employees as human beings. Toxic environment. Save yourself the trauma.
