I started at Dofasco in September of 2018. I had never driven a crane before and didn't know what to expect. Immediately I struggled due to lack of training. Eventually I progressed and every day I challenged myself to be better. Every day I became better. I have never had a job that continually pushed me and challenged me the way this job had. Between this and the crew I was on, I felt that this was the best job I could possible have. I loved going to work everyday. However my wife had a medical emergency and I had to take a leave of absence in January. While I was off co-workers would message me stating the team leader had said I pooched my chances of getting hired on full time. This was deflating. How could someone be so cold hearted. So I didn't go back. I have regretted it since. Being a casual stunk, and getting hired fulltime was like a lottery, but I loved it.
Points positifs
Challenging work
Points négatifs
nepotism, Cold hearted Team leader

Will fire you for breathing when you're on contract. Can't get away with anything even when a family member dies they will not hire you because you took grievance. Full time workers get away with murder.

Hands down the best place I have ever worked at. The money is great and the people that you work with here make the 12 hour shifts fly by. Everyone including management and people in the office are very friendly.

Got great crane experience over the 2 years working there. The management was alright. Did everything I was asked to do and more, and it apparently still wasn't enough. They seem to hire the dead beats instead of the employees who have the skills and knowledge. They make attendance seem like a huge hiring factor, but I never missed a day over 2 years and was never late and still didn't make the cut. A lot of the hiring process is all politics.

More contractors than full time employees, good perks once hired on full-time. Team oriented atmosphere. Steady employment.Competitive wages. Good hours(schedule)

Contract work yet still fun people to work with. Supplied me with training that further advanced my work career i.e crane and forklift training. Contract work was the only bad part no possibility of full time or benefits.

Its a safe place to work. They take it very seriously, which is obviously a plus. The only downside is the casual hire program. You go through a two year probationary period. And you're not even guaranteed a job. I saw a lot of hard working people get passed up for no real reason. Or at least a plausible one. You take your chances.

A typical day would include moving coils with an overhead crane to keep production going. I've learned the importance of time management. The hardest part of the job is the long hours but the most enjoyable part of the job is working with others and building relationships with them.
Points positifs
Challenging myself to work the overhead crane
Points négatifs
Long Hours

It's started off good working at dofasco. The money was good and easy work. The shift work takes its toll on you though. Hard on the body and mind. There was very little chance at a full time position and treated like a number. It took over a month to get my ROE after numerous times trying to contact HR through various methods.
Points positifs
Good pay, only work around 15 days a month, some good coworkers, OT often
Points négatifs
12 hour rotational shifts, hard work life balance, can be dirty, grumpy employees, very bad for your health, no job security.

Working at Dofasco is a pretty fast paced environment, not a bad place to work if you are single, however if you are married with kids like myself you will find that your not home as much as you'd like to be. The divorce rate there is extremely high due to the hours you are forced to work. They pay you very well for this reason however its not a place for everyone, you stress a lot here with so many people on contract and competing to land a full time position. During my time here I have only witnessed one actual person get hired on, they rest were shown the door upon the end of their contract.
Points positifs
Money
Points négatifs
Hours, Contract, working conditions

Good place to work, long hours though. Found that working 12 hour shifts was hard when you lived quite a ways away, driving time, through rush hour traffic.

Very productive workplace with great people. Great paying job with management opportunities in the future. I feel like I am apart of something important while i'm at work. It is a very fast paced job and can be very dangerous at times, but safety is number one there and everyone does there job safe and looks out for each other.

Working for this company was great I like the fact that the work schedule is a contential shift based. you learn the most up-to-date H&S procedures and practices. Yiour safety is key to this company. The hardest part of this employer is working on a contractual basis for the first two years. Depending on the need will determine if you get hired on as a full time employee. The most enjoyable part of working here is the interaction between employees and management. Everyone works with the same goal in mind. Get the job done safely and effiently. The wages are quite high compared to other facilities in the area.
Points positifs
salaries, work environment, contential shifts
Points négatifs
2yr contractual hirings
