In general, a well organized workplace with numerous opportunities in a variety of nursing fields, lots of lateral mobility to try different areas of nursing and plenty of flexibility for casual, part time, temporary, or full time work. A generally collaborative and team-based environment.
I work with a great group of staff which includes management, educators, lactation consultants, Neonatologists, fellows, residents, respiratory therapists, fellow nurses, unit clerks and unit aides, diagnostic imaging techs and transport nurses. We all work great as a team supporting one another so we can give the best care to our fragile clients. There are always opportunities to learn through workshops, education days and presentations at Grand rounds.
You will experience a just culture which helps in improving patient/client care. Case load can be improved if more staff is added to current staffing levels.
Great health benefits.
A big case load.

It was an average place to work. My biggest criticism would be management and two-faced co-workers. Benefits were the time off and flexibility of hours, the healthcare plan, the level of care provided to the patients and their families, the enforcement of procedures and protocols and guidelines. This place made me become an excellent or nurse with a really strong Foundation. it provided me with unlimited opportunities and unique

Great place to work! Very appreciative of the supportive environment and learning experiences. Amazing staff and management team who support new learners but also provide challenges to more experienced nurses who wish to continue to grow.
Unit 44 trauma surgery is amazing. Fun and interesting staff. Great teamwork environment, excellent facility and physicians. I miss it. New facility and excellent resources and educational opportunities for advancement.
Pay, flexibility, great management
I loved the job and working with nearly all of my coworkers. When I had exhausted my skills in resolving some issues with a colleague I requested the aid of Management. This was not as effective as I had hoped.
Health care benifits for family
Costic work environment on one unit only
My experience working with AHS over-all has been great. I have had the pleasure of working on unit 47 at the RGH facility. I have had two opportunities for specialized work / experience advancement as a casual emplyee, I feel this is extraordinary. The manager Karen Kristjansen allowed me to conduct a project on the unit which has significantly changed the way we care for dementia patients, and am now involved in a COPD specialized education project on the unit. I love that through AHS there are so many perks, education opportunities, and chances for changes in career path.
hard to get known starting out
I love my job and the people that I work with. I do wish that there was more time for patient care and not the forms needed for accreditation of the hospitals.
staff support and training
unpaid training and overtime
Alberta Health Services is a wonderful place to learn and grow your practice. There are not many opportunities for advancement. There are not many positions available. Areas are over hired and shifts are hard to come by making it difficult to accelerate learning and improve skills.
As stated below generally satisfied with current position- but would like to expand my scope of practice
Generally satisfied with my work life and current position. There are times when it can be frustrating to work In The ER due to patient volume, lack of beds, lack of staff resulting in the inability to provide care that each patient deserves.
A life long learning environment
Inability to provide care that each individual patient deserves on a consistent basis
Full time position is as you would expect. Lots of hours, good pay but you do lose your life in some ways due to the nature of the shift work and long shifts. Good job overall.
Good pay, helping people.
Long hours, shift work.
Unsupportive management and physicians. Overbooked clinic and OR. Educator only support person. Hostile and toxic work environment. At times very unsafe and unsupported in the procedure room. As well as in the clinic
Potential to be a great place with the proper support and management
Overbooked and hostile coworkers
The management is strong and supportive. I was always well informed, professionally addressed, and felt comfortable at work. It is easy to transfer within Alberta Health Services from one position to another and you are well supported throughout the process. It will be hard to leave Alberta Health Services. I felt respected and that the job was well paid.
