Excellent colleagues, management leaves a lot to be desired

I have worked for AHS since 2007, in various parts of Alberta. I relocated to RD in 2020. I have struggled with the majority of the managers I have worked under since moving here. Unfortunately things often are done in non union compliant ways, and the union is very familiar with all of the managers I have had issues with. I have had to grieve multiple job positions that I was then granted after the grievance process. As someone with a fair amount of seniority, I have had the least amount of vacation/personal leave approved since moving here, and often have had my shifts moved from days-evenings and weekdays to nights. Granted much of this was during Covid, but from what I gathered it was not uncommon pre Covid. The staff themselves are decent, with the exception of the usual bad apples. Some of the doctors are great, others are difficult to work with (as usual). Short staffing is often an issue (as usual). Not a bad area to work in, as many places are willing to provide some great education and training opportunities, but be prepared to stand up for your rights as an RN a bit more than you would typically have to in the larger centres.

Toxic work environment

Toxic work environments. Double standards. Unfair hiring process. Significant employee turnover because of the toxicity. The culture gives lip service to the moto of CARES.

Points positifs

There are some nice people but less and less.

Points négatifs

Significant co-worker bullying

Did not enjoy the bureaucracy and feeling like contribution was taxpayers money not well spent.

Did not enjoy the bureaucracy and feeling like contribution was taxpayers money not well spent. Saw limited opportunity for advancement despite my extensive experience in Hospitals in two other provinces.

Points positifs

Good Salary

Points négatifs

Unrewarding work, disconnected from clinicians and patient care.

Horrible

The staff at AHS Red Deer is toxic with many bullies. DO NOT WORK THERE! Not a place where you feel supported or comfortable. So stressful I had ++ anxiety going to work and I was very depressed about my entire experience there.

Points positifs

None

Points négatifs

Extremely toxic work environment

Good coworkers, management has poor communication skills

No sense of pride, that's what working for the government entails I suppose. Biggest problem is the for staff no nothing about the overall goings on. Management will change things at the last second or are inconsistent in the application of policies.

Great place to work, comfortable environment

Very good all around, would recommend to anybody seeking newer opportunities, friendly and easy going staff. Great coworkers to work with. Very eye opening to new experiences in a hospital environment, yet always delivers a sense of worthWould recommend to anybody.

Points positifs

Good Pay, Good Staff, Good Coworkers

Points négatifs

No Cons whatsoever

It’s ok

It’s exactly what you would expect from a corporate conglomerate. Ok wage, higher expectations for some positions, less for others, some management is amazing, some is garbage but the bonus is they hav exhort high turn over so if you don’t like where you are, you can always move on to something different and hope it’s better and if not just remember you can always repeat the process or wait for new management, that happens lots here too.

Leader was a Micromanager

It was a typical admin job. Not much bad to say but not much good either. A lot of clock watchers around. My guess is that the level of happiness in your job depends on which department you are in and who is your Leader. Mine was so-so but couldn’t take the micromanaging.

Points positifs

On-site amenities (coffee shop, cafeteria)

Points négatifs

Pay for parking

Has not been the greatest experience for myself personally

There are ups and downs of course. Suffice to say that I am very satisfied with the wages and benefits and I have the pleasure of working with a fantastic team; one of the best group of ladies in my career.

Points positifs

Good team

Points négatifs

Regimented and stifling

Pay is great

Good wages and benefits. Permanent employees over 20 hours/week have access to Pension, RRSP, Personal Days off and Health Spending Account. Unfortunately, permanent full-time vacancies are uncommon now, leaving departments to work shorthanded in the name of cost-cutting. I’ve worked with AHS for almost 4 years, interviewed for about 10 permanent full-time positions during that time, but ended up working in a series of temporary and casual contracts. With the implementation of ConnectCare, fewer Admins will be needed to cope with the currently cumbersome workload.

Float unit clerk in fast paced environments.

I love being a unit clerk. I enjoy going where the need is to help out a unit and perform my job to the best of my ability. We can be very busy with admissions, discharges, transfers and post op patients, let alone the orders we process on the unit. In the clinics you're checking patients in, making sure the proper information is available for their appointment, re booking appointments or surgeries and always being kind, professional and helpful.

Points positifs

co workers are usually awesome

Fast paced and competitive

very good place to work, however very competitive for positions, don't take into account seniority and experience. Working as a casual is great however someday the uncertainty of hours is concerning. A lot of politics in healthcare, but overall great team environment
