Telecommunications Operator (Ancien employé) - Alberta Hospital Edmonton - 19 septembre 2023

Most bizarre work experience I have ever had. Interview was great, with two wonderful Team Leads. It went downhill after that. I should have known when they hired me so fast. Training is minimal. Eight 12 hour shifts to learn it all. Not enough time. Alarm systems, the zones, different hospitals, health centers, multiple radio channels and phones. There is too much to learn in such a short period of time. The radio room is small. There is not back up for it if there is a fire or it has to be evacuated. Lose it and all dispatching for the province goes down. It is housed in a 70 ex mental hospital that still smells of death and despair. I was told they did electroshock therapy there back in the day. Coworkers are clannish and if you don't fit in right away, they will make your life difficult. This is a public safety communications center, but you wouldn't know it from the loud non work conversations going on. Radio calls are missed, phones not answered because they are all distracted by their cellphones and talking to each other nonstop. Manager is horrible. No people skills whatsoever and does not understand how the systems work. Is only there 3 out of 5 days. Only sees the negatives and cannot motivate. Most of the staff think they need to be put out to pasture. I had my own issues learning the skills needed and the work environment was not helpful. It was a blessing to be let go during my probation.

Working in any admin position seems comfortable, I can't speak to the experience of medical professionals within AHS. I worked at multiple sites and some were better than others. I had a good manager in my department.

Hiring process was far too drawn out and disorganized.

The job itself is decent, but lack of communication and the overall disorganization of the hiring process leaves much to be desired. It took more than 6 months to get hired on despite having more than a decade of relevant experience and the facility screaming for nurses. It then took another 7 months to receive my first buddy shift. From my date of hire, it took over a year to have my ported over hours from Covenant Health processed and reflected in my wage.This is not the way to recruit and retain staff. It's no wonder there is such a nursing shortage crisis.

Excellent benefits and pay. The flexibility to work from home is amazing. Metrics are a bit inaccurate and do not capture all of the things we do within human resources shared services. I've enjoyed my time there but I'm moving to human resources business partners to focus ore clients needs.

I enjoyed my time at AHS in various temp roles. The temp roles were like a foot in the door, and once you're in it's easy to move to something else that better suits you. All of the roles I held offered me so much support.

Consistent Workdays and Supportive Environment

Training for each shift is pretty thorough to ensure you understand the different tasks for each role. Co workers are helpful and work together when you are struggling to complete tasks. Overall a consistent environment, however requires a lot of manual labor (ex. Lifting, walking).

My work site was rife with favouritism and almost seemed to encourage negative behaviour and unprofessional conduct from the favoured few.The "u favourites" were worked harder and targeted for frivolous discipline repeatedly. 5 people taking stress leave and/or outright leaving over 2 years - can't be a coincidence.
